5.4 3.73 vs. 3.5 eco 3.55 Better towing?

8,000lb trailer is pushing it for any half ton truck, but I doubt you could actually tell the difference between a 3.55 and 3.73. 2013 has a better tranny and more torque at lower rpm

I pulled a 6300# trailer up I70 out of Denver with a 14 EB with 3.15 gears. It pulled like it wasn't there, kept it at 65 MPH up that grade, however, I had it tuned, and was not watching temps, so it slightly overheated. It did not have a tow package either, which most likely helped with it overheating.
The 3.5 with a tow package will out pull anything else safely, regardless of the gearing, but just make sure whatever one you get, it has the payload needed for that kind of weight.

Select shift transmission if the 2010 has it she might be workable. But EB 3.55 would be better if you can afford. 8,000 is a load. Assuming WDH and use of a scale the two most important numbers from safety handling standpoint axel weights / distribution and GCVW are far and away your most important numbers.

A few years back, the Fast Lane Truck guys used a 3.5 EB to pull 8 and 10k trailers up that big grade in Colorado. The EB was able to pull without issue, they actually had to back off the throttle to stay under 65 mph. There is a u-tube out there showing the runs.
My thought, pulling up a big grade AT SEA LEVEL, both trucks will do well. If you are at altitude, the EB will win hands down. The EB will push lots of O2 into the engine, the normally aspirated will loose power as you get higher.
EB will guzzle LOTS of gas though.

I really wouldn't want to pull much more trailer with my F150 but it has more to do with the 145WB and the fact the trailer is 28'11" than weight I believe.
I suspect a 164WB with HDPP would pull a 12,000 lb 32' Trailer just fine.

I had a 5.4 with the 3.73. It pulled well but...
I also had a 3.5 eco with 3.55 gears. The difference was astounding. I was laughing at how much better the eco pulled the same 8k lb load. Hardly ever shifted down on medium sized midwest hills. 5.4 shifted down all the time and had a hard time keeping speed up hills. eco would do any speed you wanted and accelerate well even. wow!
