if your manual is the same as mine, it recommends premium fuel when towing or in extreme conditions.

I'd bet that coyote would sing under some high test.

You are right!
Below is the statement in the Owners Manual....
There is nothing about gas in page 276 or in towing section that I could find, nevertheless, It seems I have a test to do....
Tks!!!

It makes the heat soak possibility much higher when the spike from hot CAC, transmission and engine all hit the single system at the same time.

100% spot on. Experienced it myself, even on 91 octane and stock tune. With 85 octane in Colorado, and 87 Tow/Perf 5* tune, the engine pulled like mad, but holy cow do the temps spike quickly up a 6%. Keep in mind though, my truck did not have a tow package and it had 3.15 gearing, both of which compound the issue, but still, that truck was a beast! With a larger radiator and a transmission cooler, it would probably tow up that mountain at 70 and stay cool.

I really wish Ford would do a dual cooling system on the eco like they do on the powerstroke. It would work to keep the engine pulling stronger due to lower intake air temps.

I supposed its because the gear spacing is so tight that trying to kick down one gear at a time might be even more obnoxious. Like "hey, i need more, no thats not quite enough, one more, no, one more, meh, one more, yeah thats good." 10 seconds later you are finally in the right gear.

This is exactly what we did in our development while in tow / haul mode with the v8 and 10 speed. 7 th and 8 th gears are the gears to tow in , 9th 10 th are pretty much invalid and are moved out , towing any kind of weight.

Wow, I'd be disappointed as well.

My truck and trailer, in my signature, usually get anywhere from 10mpg to 11.5 mpg with 11mpg being the norm. I've pulled through highwinds of 40mph and hills and never had a problem with the engine getting hot or straining in high 90 degree weather with full sun. I always tow with "Tow Mode" and let the transmission find the best gear for the situation.

Perhaps Ford will come out with a new transmission program to address the issues with towing. Pretty disappointing.

Interesting that a 3.73 axle with the ten speed has the same first gear ratio as the old six speed would have with a 4.19 axle.

I have a 3.55 in my '13, which would have the same first gear as a 3.15 in the new ten speed.

I think the 10 speed is a solution in search of a problem. It's a product of the marketing department.

Do you have one, or own one? It's perfectly fine on the ecoboost, i think the 5.0 just doesn't have to torque for gears 9-10 with a load so it shouldn't be used and ford will probably flash the tcm accordingly.

I think you are probably right about the 5.0. The 10th gear is so tall that even if you could get a 4.10 it would only make it as short as the old 6th gear with a 3.73.

I was actually wondering if the ecoboost can even really use 10th very well with 3.31's or 3.15's. Thats a super tall gear, you would need to be going like 80 mph to get to 1750 rpm with 3.31's.
