Default 2018 5.0 with 3.73 towing

Hey Im new to the form, just ordered a new 2018 5.0 Screw 6 1/2 box with with the XLT Special appearance Package, with 373 rear end, I was going back and forth between this motor and the 3.5 ecoboost, after talking with quite a few Ford tech they said the 5.0 was a better motor, however this maybe true, but i use my truck for towing, we have a 8000# Travel trailer all loaded up does anyone know if this new truck will pull this with no issues? any advice would be great thanks!!

You should read the many posts on this section of the forum. In short, an 8,000 pound travel trailer is likely going to be iffy without Max Tow or HDPP.

8,000 pounds puts 1,040 on the hitch, which with a WDH is right at the limit.

However, your PAYLOAD may be the issue. It, minus the weight of you and all your passengers, any modifications you make to the truck (bedliner, bedmat, etc.), minus anything you load into the truck, comes off the payload number. You then basically need 1,100 pounds remaining.

So, if you had four 200 pound adults, your payload would have to be 1,900 pounds. It won't be.

If it's just you and your wife, you could be fine.

Go see if they have one on the lot similarly equipped and read the payload sticker.

Frankly if you're towing that substantial weight, I'd have gone with the 3.5 ecoboost. Especially if you encounter any terrain (hills, mountains).

But +1 to Rick on ratings.

I also think the 3.73 gears are really unnecessary with the 10sp auto. More research here is needed.

Ford info on there sight is saying 11400# max with my configuration, GCWR, my truck plus my Camper, not sure how accurate it is? if I have to change motor i still can, the tech's i spoke with said they just worried about life span of the Turbo's, i usually keep my trucks 10 plus years. only adv about 5-8k a year,

max tow number means nothing without knowing your payload and packages.

As for turbos....turbocharging isn't new technology. Diesels have been using turbos since the 60s or 70s, and Ford isn't new to turbo technology, either And I trust a tech about as far as I can throw him, especially if said tech learned how to fix vehicles by doing what the diagnostic computer tells him.

Either way, the key numbers are your specific truck's payload, axle, and GVWRs. max tow number is virtually meaningless.

Again, you need to do some reading. This is discussed over and over on the forum. Big difference between pulling a 4 wheeled haywagon and a trailer with tongue weight.

You cannot use any of Ford's numbers, as you're not buying a stripped truck.

It will pull it just fine. It may not be as casual or calm as the Ecoboost, but it has the HP needed to do the job.

Hi, Merica78, and WELCOME to the forum and to our campfire.

Your 5.0L V8 engine will struggle with an 8k TT in mountains and hills. Plus it will probably be overloaded over the payload capacity of the staandard F-150.

If it's for me an I want to tow that trailer, I'm going back to the dealer and change the order to at least the 3.5L EcoBoost engine and the max tow pkg. Then you won't have any concerns with pulling the weight of an 8k trailer over the mountain passes. But that won't solve the overloaded problem, so while I'm changing the order I'd add the heavy duty payload pkg (HDPP). But you cannot have both the HDPP and the appearance pkg, so cancel the flim-flam and get the truck you need for safely towing that trailer.

Max tow includes the integrated trailer brake controller (ITBC) and the 36-gallon gas tank, so with HDPP (which requires max tow) you'll have everything you need for safe towing an 8k trailer except tow mirrors. So be sure your order includes tow mirrors.

My tt is around 7500# loaded with stuff and ive had no trouble towing with my 2016 5.0 with the 3.31 rear end. Weve taken through the ups and downs of Pa. and the Virginia's en route to Sc. It just likes to rev in 3rd going uphill. Never seen the tranny temp jump more than about 2 degrees or had any other concerns other than the growl of the engine revving up to get the hp its needs. Ive got the xlt sport pkg and a payload of 1898 lbs. Equalizer wdh and the truck sits nice and level .

As for the 3.5 EB, my last truck had 3.15 gears and I towed my 6400 pound, actual weight, not guestiweight, trailer up and over I-70 through Colorado, and it pulled it strong. The 5.0 will do it too, but will be screaming as it does, and not as quickly.

I second what Smokey said about the order. If you really are looking to use this as a tow vehicle, better to get what you need rather than what you want. Bling takes away from payload, which takes away from hitch weight, which in turn, takes away from towing capacity.
