Thanks for the help guys! So my hitch receiver can tow something over 5,000 pounds then? Just wanna make sure I’m safe. I only plan on it being about 400# between my wife, kid and dog... and then packing clothes for a 4-5 day trip. Nothing crazy...

A Tonnue cover but it’s a trifold one that isn’t heavy at all

The receiver rating is right there on the sticker. With a weight distribution hitch, the receiver is good for 1,110 lbs. of hitch weight on the receiver or towing 11,100 lbs.

Take the truck to the scales on the next family outing and you don't have to guess the payload available for hitch weight.

It's a lot to digest for anybody and one of the reasons why you see so many overloaded 1/2 ton trucks. Too many people believe their truck, no matter what trim it is, can tow a big heavy trailer, when in reality, not many can.

Keep an eye on that rear GAWR ! If your payload limit won't screw you...that one will. What's your weight of that axle with you / partner in the truck?

Aren't these guys AWESOME!?! I too will be going Camper shopping soon, and I'm pretty sure I would have been looking at campers with too much weight!
I'm just planning to have plenty of cushion on my payload when I do settle on one - don't want to push the truck over payload after a long camping weekend of Brats, Beers and Desserts!

I am looking into buying a Heartland prowler 272lx, in case any of you are nice enough to look it up and give me some towing insight

GVWR 7,500 lbs....examples in this thread apply...

15% tongue weight = 1125#
WHD hitch = 100#
You (wife & kids) = 500#
---------
Need a payload of = 1725# or more showing on the door sticker...

assuming no dealer or owner installed mods and no extra cargo in the truck.
