Default 2004 4.6 with heavy duty towing package

I'm trying to figure out what the weight of RV I should buy for my F150. Here is my build specs
2004 F150, 4.6, heavy duty tow package (C1CAE), 3.55 rear end, heavy duty front shocks (D1DAC), heavy duty rear shocks (D1GAC), heavy duty Aux Transmission Oil cooler (FKAAE), 8.8 axel size, and engine super cooling system (DAAAD). front GAWR 3450 lbs, rear GAWR 3400, GVWR 6650 with a 126" wheelbase.

I want to say the window sticker said 9500 towing capacity, and the stock hitch is rated at 9800 and the hitch came with the 7 pin connector with a trailer brake harness included.

I'm thinking I can safely pull about 6200 lbs, but I have to be certain.

looks like your max is 6200 lbs.

up to 9200* when properly eq. that'd be a 5.4 reg cab long box 4x2< or somthing like that.

not saying you cant but i dont hink i'd pull 6200 behind a 4.6 vs 5.4/5.0/3.5 eco. more so proly stick around 5K max

I had the 05 version of your truck. The suspension was fine for towing. but the 4.6 seriously lacked power. especially, in the summer. If I were to do it again, I'd put in a set of 4.10 gears. That wouldn't increase your towing capacity, but it would really help overcome the lack of power from the 4.6

I had the same F-150, but one year older. 2003 Lariat SuperCrew 4.6 2V with 3.55 axle ratio. Fancy, comfortable, beautiful dark blue grocery getter and commuter car, but a realistic towing limit was around 4,000 pounds.

Mine was underpowered when trying to tow a 5,000-pound enclosed cargo trailer from Midland TX to Phoenix AZ and back. As soon as I got home I sold that weakling and ordered a new EcoBoost.

So you had the heavy duty towing package rather than the standard towing package? And the factory hitch, was it rated at 98000?

its not so much about mech. adv. with gearing but lack of engine power w/ the 4.6 vs 5.4 and newer engines.

The limiting factor may not be the TOWING capacity, but the HAULING capacity. What is the PAYLOAD capacity of the truck? How much weight can you load on the truck: trailer tongue, passengers and other cargo on the truck? It is shown on the tire loading sticker on the driver's door. Figure 13% of the trailer weight will be on the tongue.

I had one of these in an '06. Great truck and I really liked the 4.6 but the problem was not with the engine it was with the transmission. On flat ground it would pull 6000lbs but once it got hilly the transmission would squeel, buck and otherwise complain. I talked to the dealer and they said that all FORD 4.6's were backed by light duty transmissions and that all 5.4's and up were backed by heavy duty units. To bad because I really liked the 4.6. Keep the weight at 5000lbs or less and you should be just fine. By the way the transmission in my '06 never overheated and once you got through the hills it went back to being fine.
