2002 F150 Lariat
 

I'm just curious as to what other people have been able to tow with the same model as me I have a 2002 F150 Lariat 5.4L Triton V8 with a 4" lift. I scanned the VIN and it says that the max tow capacity is 7700 lbs but inside the door says the max tow capacity is 5500 lbs. What is the most you guys have been able to tow?

i had a '99 supercab with 5.4 as my first truck. i pulled everything with it. the most i ever pulled with it was around 12,000 lbs. with 3.73 gears pulling it wasn't an issue until i came to a hill then i had to give in to the throttle. i'm not saying pulling that much is a smart thing to do but your truck can pull that much weight if it must be done

That's good to hear. I want to haul a Mini Excavator and the machine and trailer is just shy of 10,000 lbs.

you will definitely want to use a weight distributing hitch towing that much weight

According to the 2002 Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide, the tow rating for a 2002 F-150 with 5.4L gas engine varies from 7,000 to 8,800 pounds max loaded trailer weight. None have 7700. The closest is a SuperCrew 4x4 with 16" tires and 3.55 axle which has a tow rating of 7,600 pounds.

The tow rating does not tell you how much you can tow without being overloaded, but only the max trailer weight you can tow without overheating the drivetrain and without being the slowpoke holding up traffic on steep grades such as hills and passes.

But a lifted truck indicates you probably have taller than stock tires, and tall tires reduce the tow rating of your truck.

I suspect you misread something. IIRC, Ford does not put the tow rating in the door jamb. They include GVWR, GAWRs an payload capacity, but not tow rating. So what exactly does the sticker with 5,500 pounds say?

Your real-world tow rating for a receiver hitch trailer is the payload capacity available for hitch weight. GVWR of your truck minus the wet and loaded weight of your truck ready to hook up and go. Divide the payload capacity available for hitch weight by 13% and the answer is the max weight of any travel trailer you can tow without being overloaded.

Then you're probably going to be overloaded over the GVWR and payload capacity of your F-150. If overloaded, you probably will not enjoy towing at all.

I agree that he misread something, but I would also point out that as a 2002, it does not have a payload capacity sticker either.
