Default Brake controller

i apologize if anyone has already done this, maybe you can just point me in the right direction... I have a 2016 F150 XL with the towing package, hitch, 7 pin and 4 flat plug. I did not get it with electric brake controller, and I知 going to buy a new trailer in a couple weeks and I need the electric brakes for my new trailer. I know where the controller goes in that little cubby, but I have seen conflicting data on whether my truck should have the wiring for it already. Also I assume I need Forscan to enable it? I知 debating having the dealer install it if the quote comes back around $200, but if parts are considerably cheaper I値l do it myself.

Anyone have a step by step in what you need for Parts, with pics of the install? Also, where can I get a forscan and what else can I do with it after I get it?

thanks in advance!

Multiple threads on this. Simply pop out the compartment and you'll see the plug.

See the FORScan thread, first post, for info on how to get the software and the adapter needed.

Hey GT_80, If the dealer is charging $200, that would be a real good price. The part itself is $85 from Internet and $125 from dealer's parts department. If you like to do it yourself, go for it, but count on spending several hours learning how to do it. You also need to purchase a plug for you truck, in order for FORScan to talk to truck.

This 2015 YouTube video could provide some help in installing the TBC. It may be different for your model year.

This 2017 YouTube video shows how to set the two TBC Module & TBC Gain Setting Values to Enabled in FORScan program. It may be different for your model year.

When I bought mine, I had it added by the service department while we were doing the paperwork, took about 30 minutes, and cost was $250.

Hey GT_80, I forgot to mention that if you decide to go with a third party TBC (like Tekonsha P3 controller), you do not need the FORScan. The FORScan is needed, if you want to use FORD's OEM TBC.

I have a question about my 2015 Lariat. It has the 4 pin flat but didn't come with a hitch. Would the wiring that I need to use the 7 pin already be in my wiring harness or do I need to run all the wires needed for the 7 pin? I want to install the factory control also.

Thanks for any help or advise.

it depends- you could call the dealer with your vin and see if it had a trailer package. Usually the towing packages came with a 7 pin, and the 4 flat is a cheap adapter you buy from walmart or an auto Parts store.
