so what limits the 2.7 so much? The 2.7 has more hp and torque than most V8's not that long ago.

Thanks guys..... I really appreciate all your input .
No. The frame, suspension, steering, axles, cooling system, transmission cooling system, etc. Most importantly, the rating of the truck is higher and for good reason.

The gross combined rating on my new Heavy duty payload is 17500lb. Tow rating is 11500. Payload is 2450lb.

“My” F150 can tow and handle almost twice the load yours can.

I went heavy duty because I don’t want an F250. Too big, too slow, too inefficient.

Thank you. Makes sense. Going to the dealership this morning, just to see how painful it would be to upgrade.

You don’t need a heavy duty like I bought - I required one because I carry heavy loads in the bed, like my 900lb Atv, while towing a camper.

For you, best deals right now are on XLT 302a. If you can find a long bed crew cab, dealers might be willing to wheel and deal because they are not as popular but are more stable towing.

When I was truck shopping I spec out a 18 XLT 302A, no FX4 or moon roof. Max tow package is a must. Payload was 2050lb, gross combined 17500 (18200 with 20in optional wheels), 12500 / 13200 lb towing. You still get luxury with 302a, but a VERY capable tow rig.

When you find one, start reading the “under invoice price paid” thread to learn how to negotiate. I had mine negotiated down to about 39k after rebates but before taxes. https://www.f150forum.com/f118/just-...5614/index704/

You can always look used too... or, pony up for the loan and just think it’s an investment in your family.

We bought our first camper for $3200. Everything works, condition is great, and it serves its purpose well. Every trip we go on it pays for itself! A trip to Disney is at least $5000...!

Good luck and good on you for recognizing a problem, asking for help, and going about the right way to fix it.

I've got a '17 STX SCREW with a few less features than an XLT, but I got 4x4, 3.5 EB, and have a 1,942lb payload capacity.

Keep the truck you have. Or get a f250!

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd and 5 1/2' or 6 1/2' bed?

More exact numbers:
TT Dry weight is rated at 6005
Hitch weight 645
I weighed it at a scale with truck, GCWR 11930 dry.
I don't plan on pulling it with water in the tanks
My truck has the XLT Sport package
Of course using a WDH
Your hitch weight is not 645. Figure 13% of the loaded trailer weight.

You didn't post your payload. From it subtract the weight of any mod you make to the truck, the weight of your WDH (use 100 pounds), the weight of you and every passenger and eveything they put in the truck with them, and the weight of anything you load in the bed. Then, the remaining payload is what you use to figure if you are over payload, take 13% of the trailer's loaded weight and subtract it. I suspect you will be hundreds of pounds over payload.

You probably want a max towing or HDPP truck.

Don't buy any truck without reading the actual payload sticker. Salesmen either don't know what they are talking about, or lie. Payload stickers don't lie.
