18 F-150 diesel

Official roll out with numbers etc by TFL trucks. 30 estimated mpg hwy plus dramatically better towing mileage should make a good addition to the f-150 stable.

expect real world mpg to be closer to 25.

i am surely disappointed it has less torque than the 3.5EB. That and you can't get it on XLT or lower, so the higher-optioned trucks will have lower payload, decreasing the actual max towing capacity off that unicorn number. other than that, pretty cool stuff

but for $68k for a 4x4 platinum with a diesel motor, heck you can get a very well optioned out F250 for that price, also with a diesel motor

You could get a brand new 2017 platinum F-250 with a 6.7 for that price.

Plus, for consumer sales, only available in Lariat and higher trim levels.

But the MPG wouldn't be close.
F250 has drawbacks with size and parking and overall ride comfort.
If you tow a lot but not super heavy and need decent MPG then the F150 would fit the bill.
I agree though the price is not commensurate with this type of consumer.

I like the idea of the diesel in 1/2 ton trucks. Many don’t tow heavy and or often and are high miles commuters. The 11,400 lb tow rating is typical Ford nonsense, maybe 8k max for this truck.

I bet this is what they are banking on. It will tow similar to an ecoboost; however get in the mid-high 20's for highway mileage.

I hate say that besides the potential for a little more MPG, the specs aren't that exciting. I wonder what the overall longevity of these motors will be compared to the 3.5 Ecoboost?

It’s not going to be all things to all people. If you tow a lot but not heavy enough to need an HD you should like it. Real world mileage will be much better especially towing. But not to replace a gas v6 for short commutes as diesel emmissions don’t do well with that. Longevity should be comencerate to other diesels. It’s not going to be fast either.

But if your focus is on fuel economy especially towing economy this may be your truck. If you put on big miles this may be your truck. It won’t replace anything just add to an improve ford’s offerings. Ram has shown there is a market and took some sales. Ford countered.

I’m in the nitch described above. 372,000 on my Ram ED transporting Airstream TTs from the Mfg in Ohio to dealerships all over the west coast. None of them weigh over 8,800 so with proper WDH they are fine behind a half ton & fine behind a small diesel. Average 15 mpg at 65 towing most any double axle AS. Low 14s avg with a double axle box TT.

Can the 3.5 EB gasser do it just as well. Yes and faster but it will also consume a lot more fuel. Many will still prefer the gasser that is fine. Ford is just adding choice. I for one am glad they are bringing it to the market for us.

BTW cheapest for now should list mid high 40s. I suspect eventually we will be able to get XL & XLT trims. Just like the big diesels more power & mileage is easier to get than with gas.

It won't even tow as good as the 2.7 ecoboost. Look on youtube at the davis dam test of the 2.7 vs the ecodiesel (which has very similar numbers to the powerstroke). Over 3 miles, towing 7000 lbs uphill, the 2.7 beat the ecodiesel by ~45 seconds!!!
