I want a truck that looks very basic / stock on the outside, like a white work truck. No fancy rims, no lift, no decals, nothing. Basically a sleeper. I only want 4x4 and a lockable diff for occasional ""off road"" usage, nothing hardcore, we are talking about Florida rain season and getting stuck with 2 wheel drive, or the boat ramp and being able to pull a small boat out without issues. After a few k miles I want to install a Whipple 2.9 with matching intake and tune, but no changes to the exhaust system in order to keep the sound also in sleeper mode (at least until the whine kicks in).

I just have to make sure that I can get a much better and stiffer suspension, as well as being able to keep the new 10 gear auto from constantly switching gears. Do you know of any tunes for the new trans?
Odd you mention the gear changes. Mine shifts so smooth I don't even notice it. I do notice the throttle response when your not in sports mode is lame. It seems to come alive when you change modes, plus it locks out the auto start stop.

It shifts smooth but I want the trans to stay in a performance orientated RPM band and not constantly go for best MPG and lowest RPM. Now, I don't recall any sports mode in the XL truck I test drove yesterday and the useless sales person didn't know **** about the truck. What model / option do I need for the sports mode option?

Maybe I should search for a 2017 XL truck with the old 6 gear trans.

Sport mode does exactly what you want. It keeps the engine in the power range, and behaves like the way you drive a manual transmission when you are driving it for performance. Some folks don't like sport mode that reason. Perhaps because they have never driven a manual transmission. My truck also has 3:73 gears. So adding the larger tires didn't really seem to effect performance. Again though I had only 25 miles when I made the change and I haven't push the truck to WOT yet.

It sounds like you have a horrible salesman, I checked and sport mode it is standard in the lowest level XL 4X4 with a 5.0 10-speed. Go back and check out sport mode, it won't fix the ride but will fix the your feelings on the 10 speed. The way you change modes there's button on the end of the shift lever.

Also the 2018 5.0 has been revised with DI and higher compression. Many folks that have had their 2018 trucks on a dyno are getting 350+ RWP a lot of us feel the 2018 5.0 HP is underrated.

Awesome. That guy told me his life story, but nothing about the modes, even though I complained a couple times over the constant low RPM shifting. What a tool.

Thank you for looking this up.

Too bad you don't live in FL. I'd love to have a look at your single cab.

I'll just try another Ford dealer and do another test ride. Heck I'll ask to have the truck for myself for a day. I'm tired of nonsense around the block rides while being spammed with unrelated small talk.

I took some time and thought about all this again. I'll test drive a F-250 Powerstroke tomorrow. If that ride and steering is stiff the way I'm used to it, I'll sell my Denali asap and get a Platinum. That's not a single cab and not a cheep sleeper, but at least I'm away from GM and still have a new ride.
