1996 ford f150 2wd to 4wd
hey guys im new to the f150 forum so i dont know how everything goes together just yet. i have a 1996 ford f150 right now at 2wd and im wanting to know how easy it would be to make it into 4wd. theres a 1990 f150 4by4 for sale on craigslsit for $900 with the something wrong with the motor says it starts and turns over but no spark. and i was wondering if i could use this truck as a donor/parts truck also the truck only has 84,000 for a 1990 which isnt bad. i guess i just want to know how hard it would be and what all i need. i cant tell if the 1990 had a straight front axle or not. thanks guys

It "is" possible....throw enough money at a Corvette and I can turn it in to a 4WD too.
Since the two trucks you would have will be different gens the parts list you need could be very large. I would not count on major parts (engine, trans, transfer case, complete front end) lining up at all.
I would look at selling your current truck, the $900 for the donor truck and all the money you would spend on the conversion in to finding a 4X4 truck. It will be cheaper in the end and you get a truck that was built that way.

Maybe to many trucks?
Your 96 F150 has a speed sensor in the rear end where as a 90 F150 has the speedometer cable to the t-case.
Because of this you would have to do modifying to make it work.
Front end would work only if the gear ratio matches.
Swapping it all out wouldn't be the worst but that is only if you have some mechanical experience.
Unless it was swapped no 80-96 F150 or F250 came with a straight axle all were TTBs (F150s D44 TTB and F250s D44HD TTb or D50TTB)
The donor truck you really need is a 92-96 with a 300I6, 302, or 351 with which ever trans you have (auto or stick), a manual t-case would be easiest, and a good front and rear end.
I highly recommend using the 4x4 rear end because then you know for sure the gears will match (granted nobody changed the one of the gears) Also the 4x4 leaf springs will make it have the 4x4 stance compared to your 2wd leaf springs.

problem with my rear tires
im having problems with my rear tires wearing excessively to much on the inside of the tires. to make it seem like the rear tires have a serious camber to them(i think thats what its called when the top of the tires is pointed in) i got into and accedent last winter that hit my passanger bed side and my father and i re did the entire rear suspension but i also bent the pass. rear wheel which i thought why my tires were wearing down so quickly so i got a new wheel and along with new wheels i just put on brand new tires about a two months ago. and both the insides of my rear tires are wearing down way to quickly. so im thinking either i need new wheel bearings or i bent the axle. any help would be great thankyou!

Best thing todo is to drop your motor in the 4x4. Converting them is not fun especially without a full shop and knowledge. There's no youtube videos for it xD
