Chilton is good enough. Haynes would be about the only other one to use as a cross reference. I usually buy both because they have different info on specific items it seems. Either one will help you out along with some online information. AllData is an online resource to use, but I've found in the past that their wiring schematics suck. The exploded view of parts and systems is good though. There's a couple others, but most of the online stuff coats money...... save YouTube and google. Lol.

Default Project planning

I am in the deconstruction phase of the build. I have removed the interior of the cab except for what I need to maneuver the vehicle. I only connect the battery when I cannot push it and need to move.

I am looking at what I would like to do to the engine. I have decided to have the 5.8L rebuilt, but was hoping to add some upgrades to increase horsepower. I am looking at a better air filter, a supercharger, and one (maybe two) turbocharger. Can I get some recommendations as to what I should go with? I can get the money to spend on doing it, but I want to do everything right and have a nice sleeper. Any suggestions please?

Unless you're building a track monster or mud truck, one forced induction system will be more than enough for a "sleeper". The "tri-boosted" thread I'm sure you've read is a special build. A super charger should be relatively straight forward as far as install and programming. A single or twin turbo application will have to be a one off as I don't think there are any kits that could transfer without some serious modification.....which would be more expensive than building one from scratch in the first place.

I believe that the supercharger should bolt up fairly easy. Depending on the pulley and fuel delivery system, you'll probably be able to push more than your stock driveline can handle. I'm not saying don't do it, but just make sure you understand what all is involved in this project. I'll come back and edit with the thread link for IBD's truck. that should give you an idea in what would be involved in a build like that.

EDIT** Here's the link to that thread. Keep in mind that he has the 5.4, not the 5.8.

Thanks for the quick answer! I'm definately going to be upgrading almost everything as this will be more of a toy. There will be some light mudding involved but it's I was hoping to up the launch a bit, just for the sake of "because I can and want to"

If you were to get a 5.8L EFI supercharger grab it up. That will upgrade you a lot of power. Most superchargers on the market are for carbureted engines.

Like Manuel says turboing and or a tri-boost is very very complex and even some of the best engine builders don't know how to build a tri-boost.

For one most big engine builds need a MAF swap if you don't have MAF already. Does your truck have one or two tubes to the air filter?

You also could get a supercharger and put an aftermarket EFI set up on it.
Like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-2900/overview/
With a similar to this super: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pa...view/make/ford
These aren't the only ones on the market just what I found fast.

Really a good set of heads, a good cam, and some headers will really help it also.
These are just a few suggestions. 351s in these trucks have a lot of potential.

Thanks for reply Trav. My truck has two tubes running to the air filter.

Then you have speed density. For most big builds you are going to need to swap to MAF. Google Maf swap and you will find out a lot about it.

After reading up starting with the resources you guys posted (thanks a ton!) I decided to lay off of the Turbos and Supercharger for now. I ran through a lot of the wiring on the interior and into the engine compartment. It's in really bad shape. I'd like to get some new harnesses like Painless Performance has, but they don't seem to carry any for the later models. Do you guys know of anything out there? Thanks!

I'll come back to edit with another thread.

EDIT** BrowningSCrew got a complete harness for his truck. His is a bit older, but they might have something for you as well. Here's the thread-
