1989 4x4 Slow Built
A rescued 4x4, found in a storage yard.
Clogged arteries, iron poor blood & stanky fuel lines. 35's and a rusty Rancho 4" lift. Broken crank shaft, still puttered off the lot with my buddy spraying carb cleaner in the TB while laying on top the engine. Good thing the hood hinges were rusty too! Four years ago we swapped in a 200,000 mile motor that died a year and a half ago. I pretty much killed it with a few crazy weight scrap runs, last one was 17,000 pounds total weight including truck & trailer. Last few stop signs on the way home were done on the starter. That's where we start. Modifications are; 1993 5.0 HO low mileage engine w/ Fresh hone to OE bore size. Clevite rod, main & cam bearings Sized stock rods with '90 TRW forged pistons, ARP rod bolts, low tension metric rings Ford Motor Sport (FMS) E303 roller cam Crane roller rockers Crane roller lifters Crane valve springs Mildly ported E7TE heads Matching gasket ported truck upper and lower intake w/ 3/8" spacer Melling hi-volume oil pump ARP oil pump driveshaft ARP rod, main and head bolts FMS valve covers MSD coil MSD 6AL ignition box FMS plug wires Headers into 2.5Y-pipe into 3" OE style pipes The 'Ol girl has all new fuel & brake lines and hardware, including a new fuel tank, fuel pumps, calipers, wheel cylinders and master cylinder. I also installed the Advance Auto budget type ZOOM clutch kit with new throw-out bearing and pilot bearing. I did the wiz wheel flywheel re-surface. I need to get my garage back. The project has gone through several concept and idea changes. However, a rebuilt engine was/is now installed, two weeks ago. |
This week I got the new radiator support installed(LMC), new 2 row radiator, radiator/ heater hoses installed, coolant filled, wired up the control box for the Taurus fan and added a few extra ground wires( 10 gauge wire to injector harness, dash, wiper and lighting harness grounds to the main battery ground).
I also polished the yellowed head lights & installed the cheapo Chinese chrome grill. Doesn't look toooo bad, but does not mount flush with the headlights. Being on the cheap, I made a adapter for the OE twin hose air intake for the K&N filter from my old bumper/ grill guard. 3" chrome tubing, I used the fog light tabs for my attachment points... Last night one of my JeepForum budies visited, I traded a 2.3 Ranger roller cam for a "new" remanufactured 140 amp alternator! |
This week my goals are to;
Alternator harness conversion install Install Taurus 2 speed fan. Finish little BS stuff ... Test fire & time engine!!! Check ALL fluids and hit grease zerks Annoy/ totally piss off neighbors!!! 'er test drive |
Ah pissing off the neighbors is the fun part, glad to see when someone rescues an 8th gen rather than hating on them.
|
That was a "oh say can you do" multi tire rooster tail out of a friends barn, the look on his face was worth everything! His son did his best to follow with his battery powered toy jeep.
Priceless .. |
So far this week I have finished routing the vacuum lines, PCV, ground clearance on the Alternator bracket for the 3G alt, installed the 3G alt, wired up the Taurus fan and got 90% of the new charging harness made. I put new signal bulbs in the front and installed SilverStar head light bulbs.
I need a few #4 & #6 gauge copper terminals to attach to the 150 amp fuse block. I also ran out of electrical tape, so I need to make a trip to the parts store today. |
how much of a dog is that e303 cam everyone is saying its a dog in the truck I got one for free scared to put it in my 95 f150 w gt40p port matched heads
|
This will be my third truck with a E cam. Listed power range is 1500 - 4000 rpm, decent low range power, torque AND good fuel economy. While it is not a "hot" off road cam nor does it make big power numbers, my '84 F150 2wd ('89 Mustang 5.0), 3+OD manual, with Holley 650 averaged 21mpg. My '89 5.0, 4x4 with 5-speed, EFI averaged 19mpg. On one trip towing my car hauler trailer with a '89 T-bird on the trailer I got 18 mpg over a 300 mile trip.
