05 Fx4 Prerruner build
#221
Hey man I see that you have got the new tie rods that brenthal had to make to correct the steering rod hitting the coilover. Do you know if they actually fix the problem and there is no more binding? I'm about to get my hands on a brenthal kit and was really curious.

Pat, I'm curious as to how much money this has actually cost you. I've always admired how much work goes into prerunners and was thinking about getting a little ranger and building one to goof around in.

@ Tsmith237 - I dont know if it has fixed the binding issue. I didn't get to really test it on my last R&R.
@ Fuugz - I have spent about $40k I think... I have not really been tracking it and I got ripped off at one point by one mechanic.
For that $40k I have painted my truck, new wheels x 5, new tires x5, 4.88 gears front and rear, K&N CAI, Edge power chip, Fiberwerx front end and bed sides, Brenthel suspension front and rear with all king up grades, tire gate, corbeau suspension seats with harnesses x 4. And all the work had to be done at shops because I have not been in the US. If you could do a lot of the work your self you would save a tone of money. Plus I am not a mechanic guy I made a lot of mistakes and had to have things redone a few times just because I dint know any better.
If I could do it all over again I would stalk DezertRanger forum and buy some one else built truck. Because you will buy a truck so much cheaper then you could ever build one for. Then you would get all the fun with none of the headaches.
You think If I was to try and sale my truck today a 2005 5.4L V8 Triton FX4 with about 120k and lets say 16" of travel front and rear and still have 4x4, and all the mods done to it I would be lucky to sale it for $18k. So just keep that all in mind if you do decide to build your own. But with all that said I dont regret it I learned a lot and I never plan to sale it

Pat,
Good job on the truck. I'll keep watching for updates. Went thru every page tonight.
Most impressed that you coordinated all of this without being state side, but this must be a nice hobby for you. Also something to look forward to and help pass the time.
How much longer are you planning to stay in Afghanistan for?
What kind of helicopter-flying, contractor are you in Afghanistan? Where can I apply?

Shop sent some pics to me today, so I thought I would share them with you guys. Im a little confused on the pics because all the tilt hoods I have seen the grill and the head light tilt with the hood. I sent them an email and I will let you guys know what they say. The tire gate is actually going to face the other direction most of the time. and the wooden license plate holder is going to be removed lol. We just had to do that to mount the plate to get her street legal when I didnt have a tire gate or tail gate.

Yep the tilt hood requires the grill and headlights to be mounted to the one pierce via a tube structure through out the one piece that will strengthen up the glass a lot too. And your completely right about getting a built truck, all your work is a labor of love lol you won't get anywhere near what you put into it, out of it when you sell it. Have you thought about a tube style rear bumper and dovetailing your rear end?

I called the owner at the shop to ask about the tilt hood. He is not the mechanic but he said that the grill and headlights would tilt with the hood.
I have not put to much thought into a rear bumper. I kinda thought I would just do a roll pan and call it a day. But for now thats fairly low on the priority list.
I need the shop to knock out this tilt hood and tire gate so we can move on to installing the seats and paint. We are now on the count down until I come home, just over 40 days!

holy cow this took me some time to read haha. Very nice build just goes to show money isnt a option when its your baby under the knife that is for sure. Great looking rig. a little overkill in my opinion on the size of the fiberglass but hey its your truck not mine lol. still badass looking dont forget about off road lights LEDS. i would say snag you up some 40'' and 50'' and youll be hated by everyone haha. \
