How To: Spark plug change-2004-2008 5.4 3V V8
#371
Got all 8 out without breaking any this weekend.
140000 miles on the old plugs and I was starting to get some pretty bad hesitation.
I followed the OP advise except I used aerokroil and let it soak overnight. I also bought the spark plug extension from amazon. Just take your time and work the plugs back and forth.
Also wanted to mention that I used a shop vac with a micro cleaning attachment and a foot of 5/8" tubing on the end to suck out the aerokroil before pulling the plugs.
Now I have an unused lisle removal tool to return to amazon.

I just did my plugs yesterday. I followed the OP instructions too. Everyone of them broke. I also had an issue with just the nuts coming out and everything else staying, this happened on the rear plugs. I could not get enough grip on the plug to pull the electrode out of the lower porcelain.
I had to make a tool. It is 3/4" flat bar with a hole drilled in the end. Place it onto the tip at an angle and when it is forced straight it grabs the plug nice and you can pull it straight up to reveal the lower piece.
Then go at it with the Lisle tool. A life saver.

Did this spark plug job over the weekend. I read this forum over probably 10 times before attempting. My truck is an 05 at 145000 miles and hasn't had the spark plugs changed since 35,000 miles, so they were past overdue. I started experiencing jerking on the highway and initially thought it was the transmission, until a Google search brought up the spark plug issue. Anyway, I decided to let my plugs soak for a good while before I attempted to bring them out all the way. Followed the steps described in this thread, but used Sea Foam Deep Creep to do the soaking. I let them sit overnight. I had debated on the method I wanted to use to take the plugs out, but eventually decided on the impact wrench method. I started on the front passenger plug and the wrench zipped it right out. You could tell the Deep Creep did it's job. Actually ended up getting all the passenger side plugs out without breaking any. At this point I thought this was going to be an easy job. Got to the back plug on the drivers side and it broke. Used the Lisle tool and it worked like a charm. Broke 3 of the 4 on the drivers side, but the Lisle tool got those 3 out with no issues. Overall it was not too bad of a job, especially with as many miles as were on the plugs. Replaced the old ones with Motorcrafts and the truck is running great.
im going to attempted mine here this weekend! when you broke yours did you use any vacuum or anything for cleanup

Blow compressed air down the spark plug opening at every tool change.
Blow air before removing the coil, after pulling the coil, after using the socket, after crushing the plug and after removing the tip. Reconnect the computer (won't crank when unhooked) and crank the engine with no plus for 30 seconds.

Thanks Crew!!
Thanks for all the time and effort guys. I think I got EXTREMELY lucky today. I ran seafoam through the tank 3 times in the past month. Warmed the engine up , got all the goodies out of the way, and went at the first plug. Was going to attempt to break it loose 1/4 turn to spray some PB and when I turned the socket wrench, it took quite a bit of force, and POW!! I said man that sucks Im sure I broke the plug. Nope, came out in one piece. I did every other plug and the exact same thing happened. Im not kidding! No PB, no carb cleaner, just broke em loose and they came right out with no issues. Plugs said PZT 14F, which is different than the newly designed plugs. Truck had 80,000. Hard to say whether plugs had been changed earlier in its life...........
Oh, and I still have the Lisle tool, brand new never been used. If someone wants to buy it less than what they are new PM me at rotus623@hotmail.com I paid $60 and I will sell it for $45 shipped to continental US. Thanks again guys!!
