It’s An 18 and your gonna tear apart the whole front end to see if you can fix something that is covered under a bumper to bumper warranty... that won’t be helpful... but it’s your truck buddy, have at it.

Default 2010 Ford F150 XLT 4x4 issues.

Looking for some help please. When trying to engage into 4hi or 4 lo while the truck is running...nothing at all happens. I notice every now and then on the dash instrument cluster at random 2x4 message will come on. I tested the resistance in the selector switch, came back fine. From what I can tell using my finger, it seems like I have good vacuum. Now a buddy came out with a snap-on code reader and said he found an odd code buried in the system saying over current. After he cleared the code, with the key turned to auxiliary, we tried shifting into 4hi and the dash says shift in progress...pull forward. As soon as we start the truck, everything goes away. Move the selector switch and nothing happens. I'm no mechanic but I'm leaning towards the transfer case notor being the culprit. I'm not sure if the dash would even say it's trying to go into 4x4 if the TCM was bad...maybe it needs to see a load? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You didn't mention, did you check fuses?

I'm not that well versed on how the shift motor is wired up, with a "shift in progress" lit up, it makes sense to me that the motor is getting a signal to shift. That doesn't mean it is running though. I could be 100% wrong.
This may sound dumb, but try resetting everything. Take your negative battery cable off for 15-20 minutes, I know that sometimes cures some ills, can't hurt to try.

Also wouldn't hurt if you had another person change from 2WD to 4H to see if you can hear any noise coming from the motor. I don't believe you need the engine to be running, just the ignition on.

I found the best way to do this is with one front wheel raised, vehicle in park, set to 2WD, engine running. You should be able to turn the tire and the half shaft should not turn. Put selector to 4H and try to turn tire, you should not be able to turn the tire because the 4x4 system should now be latched to the transmission which is in park.

This is the first time I have ever posted in here and it's not real clear on how to post anything, so please don't kill me.

Looking for any help I can get. I just purchased a 2011 F-150 Platinum that was my father-in-laws. The 4WD was very rarely ever used in this truck. I switched it over to 4WD high the other day and it was shifting really hard. Same thing was happening in 4W low as well. It's cold here in Missouri so I didn't know if something could be frozen or what the deal was, only that it was extremely concerning. Everything runs well in 2WD and like I said, the 4WD option was used maybe a hand full of times when he had it. Any help anyone can provide would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not aware of anything switching to 4X4 would cause the trans to shift harder than normal, except in low range. Even then the trans shouldn't actually shift harder, it seems like it does, but that's because of the additional gear reduction in low range.
Does this model year have 4A? If it does, try running in that to see what happens.
