How to smoke tail lights
talk to some body shops and see what they say. i did mine myself and i am by no means a pro in any way. i used the VHT NightShade spray paint ($12 from O'reillys) and some gloss clear coat spray from menards ($3.50 for a can).
pull out the taillights and clean them very well so there is no oil or wax residue on them, lightly scuff them with an SOS pad (works good if you dont have a high grit sandpaper), clean again, then spray a very light coat of the VHT on, let sit for 5-10 min between coats. make sure you spray lightly or it will run, its very thin stuff. 2 coats is a nice tint, 3 is pretty dark, 5+ is black. once it dries then clear it with about 2-4 coats, with maybe some light 800 grit sanding between your 2nd and 3rd coat. make sure you wait about 10 min between coats also
im not on my comp otherwise i would post a pic. go into the 04-08 forums and i got some pics in there in a recent post

Maybe i can add some insight on the subject. There are two very effictive means of tinting head lights or tail lights. The best way in my opinion is to tint the clear. You dont want to use an actual color though, you need to use tinting colors which are at any local paint store. They use tint colors to make different shades like what you would see on your car. You can add as much black as you want and it will be as dark as you like and it has kinda of a single stage effect and will be glossy no matter how many coats you put on. Or the second way you could put base coat in a reducer such as duponts 7175, tint it to you liking, base coat it over some adhesion promoter and clear coat it. I once did a pair metallic green, kinda weird. Just be sure to use a light sand paper such as 2000 or 3000 and clean it with a good wax remover and degreaser, dupont 3900s. Also use a tack rag, trash and fish eyes show up exceptionaly bad when its transparent.
tinted mine today..nightshade is garbage but got some other kind from autozone and turned out a million times better.taped off my rever lights ..its sick.and on the third brake light i taped off the reverse ligths and also taped off a f150 logo into the light so when i hit the brake it lights up f150
