In the meantime, what's this about a spark plug gap? I hadn't read about that before. So you're saying that for any tune I might get, just flashing the tune is not enough - I have to do something to the spark plugs, too? Is this something someone who's never done anything remotely similar to it (at least what it sounds like) can do? Is it required, or merely suggested?

Sorry for your experience 8wood. READ VERY CLOSELY I AM NOT DEFENDING BUT ONLY OFFERING ADVICE:
8Wood, prior to loading the tunes did you re-gap your plugs? If not that is one of the things you "should" do with any of the aftermarket tuners. Gap them down to .032-.030. I also recommend going with the SP-534's....seriously try this first.
----Read all my tuner recommendations and I always caution guys who run Shawn's tunes as their first ones....REASON---they are insanely touchy, fast, and some of us run pretty high boost numbers----my truck has ran higher than requested boost from both of tuners...datalogs are hidden in a locked thread somewhere.
Don't give up totally on Shawn, yet. A lot guys come back and love the tunes...but if this is your first set---they'll make you nervous. I know you have a 630hp mustang----(I've had 360HP stealths, 12 sec fastbacks, 14sec SS's...you get the point)----but SSinc tunes are characterized by insane amounts of throttle tip in---they can be lightened but they are no longer a Shawn Ellis tune.
You could blind fold me and load tunes from my different tuners and I could tell you exactly who created it. Seriously for what you want...Try Unleashed Tunes...little less tip in, good boost, good shifts. My knock numbers are slightly higher on Torrie's tunes but they "feel" more tame.
Shawn's knock numbers for me never max beyond 2.99* and I've got a tune pushing 20+lbs almost across the board.
Check out Torrie's tunes, and then re-visit Shawn's tunes. I run SSinc as a daily driver....but I also drive daily in basically a SHO with less torque reduction and a locked 50/50 AWD when I'm working.
I have tons of datalogs...to be honest it's a royal pain the rear to extract it, re-size it, and post a pic of the graph.

I don't know why this community is so against "data logs" from tuners being shown. Another gripe I have is the idea that these tunes from custom tuners aren't canned. The tuners aren't making you a custom tune everytime they get a new customer, they are building the tune off another truck that they did a custom tune. Then they usually pull some timings, slightly lower the boost, and richen up the fuel table to ensure it's safe for every truck. They are using the same tune they gave the last guy and every other guy. A custum tune REQUIRES datalogging and then reading the data, changing the data to get the most of the individual vehicle.
I use to do some of my own tuning back on EVO's a couple years ago, so i have a small grasp on some thing you can do to make a tune feel fast and feel awesome. With that being said, having the waste gate immediately close to like 70% or more with a light touch of the throttle (which is what it feels like on my working tune from Shawn) it creates huge amount of instantaneous torque, giving you that SNAPPY feeling. That Snappy feeling is just murder on your drive train over time. It also increases cylinder head pressure along with added heat and unnecessary increased drag on your turbos. All this leads to decreased durability of your engine and turbos. In my opinion, I just don't like the massive amount of boost under light throttle operation...that's suppose to happen under WOT! Again all of this is my opinion about the tune. Some people just want all out power and torque throughout all RPM's and loads. If you want uncontrolled unrefined power, SSI tunes are probably for you. They do feel incredibly fast, but I don't think a .25-.5 1/4 times change is worth it especially on a daily driver 6000 lbs truck.

Are you a member of the SSI forum? #1 issue right there if you are not. This allows full access to a wealth of information from all us SSI owners and allows not just Shawn but a few others to see your datalog and help.diagnose. Shawn needs several items listed in your email to get your tunes going. He is extremely busy and its hard if he has tons of customers to go searching for your specific tunes based on an email address. You have to be a forum member to get tunes due to several issues with customers screwing him over and the ability to reach the SSI community for help.
Shawn's tunes are far from low quality. And just an FYI all his tunes are true custom. This means your ECO could act differently than others which happens frequently. If you were on our forum you would easily see that.
Get on the forum hit up Shawn and give him a chance to get you set up right. But make sure you have the info he needs ready.

No tuner wants any data logs displayed on an open forum. You get just enough info to be dangerous.
My T4 tune doesn't have any more boost at slight and moderate throttle than stock or the canned SCT tunes, only at about half throttle and above does it show an increase in boost according to the gauge. Sounds to me like you have a BOV problem, not a tune problem.
I have power on demand, very refined, but it does come on quick.
You need to get on his forum and you will get answers now.

Shawn's tune are definitely custom....
He sends a base file (normally pretty good), you post on the forum for tweaks to that tune and in about 1-2 days he'll get them dialed in. After that happens you close your own work order thread.
Process is pretty fool proof...just a few steps.

If you have a SSI tune why don't you datalog it yourself? If you can't read it send it to Corey or Boosted and they will read it for you.
If the SSI tune is too snappy for you have Shawn tone it down for you. All you have to do is ask.

I'm a email type of person, but after dealing with Shawn many times, I think its the best to contact him over the phone, things get sorted out alot quicker with phone calls, if you reach his vm, just call back later.

Crisp shifts are actually better on the drive train. Harsh shifts are not....are you saying that the added "power" is more strain then----- Okay, I'm in agreement.
If you are saying that firm shifts are harder on it then----No way Jose. Stock shifts that are soft are harder on the transmission than firm ones are.
