Default Tranny Whine in R or D...anyone else??

2012 5.0 SCrew short box 3.55 no LSD. My issue is that the trans makes a "whine" noise similar to a trans main pump making noise. It only does it in Reverse and Drive. I notice it most in my driveway and drive-thru's as I am stopped at idle and moving slowly. Can't hear it over road noise at higher speeds.

The issue I'm having is the dealer is saying this is normal. Now went to an automotive school and worked at a Toyota dealer for about 4-5 years before working on planes now. To me this noise is not normal. It's a little embarrassing when your family members (all GM owners) give you crap when pulling in a parking lot and its making terrible noises that are considered "normal" according to this dealership. Yet I have been in my friends new F150's and have not heard this in any of there's.

Has anyone had this issue and had it resolved? This is the 2nd time I have had it at the dealer and they are saying its normal still. Any help would be great!!!!!!

If they haven't a clue, it's "normal."

Haha, sad thing is I think your right!

I would hate to have to pay for someone else to diag the truck when it's under warranty but I think your right.

Crazy thing is I've had it for 1 1/2 yrs now and only have 11500mi on it.

So has anyone else noticed this on their f150? Toy knowledge all the f150's have the same trans, minus the raptor maybe.

A little update. Went to the dealer after work and drove the truck with the service manager in the passenger seat. He had drove it earlier but did kit notice such noise. When I drove it with him in the truck he did finally hear it. He said tomorrow he will be getting a hold of the engineers and see what can be done. Hopefully they come up with something.

My truck has a trans whine only in 6th gear and while climbing a grade. It varies on how loud it is. Unless it becomes very loud I'll leave it alone. I've driven some GM trucks with the 4L80 and Allison trans that were much louder.

****UPDATE****

The items replaced were the Torque Converter and the Main Pump. The whine is GONE!!! It's about time that the service department did something worth a darn! Anyhow, I still have a little shuttering issue but I'll wait till winter as it is more noticeable then.

i have a 2011 with 5.0. mine has the whine around 1500 rpms. I haven't taken it in yet. I problem started about 2 or 3 thousand miles ago and I had a tranny flush about 10k to 15k miles ago.

Hopefully it was serviced with enough fluid. Because if the fluid level is low if can sometimes put air in the fluid making it a bit frothy in some cases therefore making it make noise at certain rpm's or all the time. That's why on some older vehicles if you hear a trans whine it may just be fluid level. But if its still under warranty then I would defiantly go get it checked out that way it's at least on record in the computer and if later on if you have issues then can go back to that as well.
