I know this sounds crazy, but here goes. My 2013 Fusion Hybrid was getting lousy MPG, yet everything checked out, then at 4500 miles it set a CEL, and they found all 4 plugs were carbon fouled. They replaced the plugs, and did nothing else, and now the car gets expected MPG. Strange that replacing the spark plugs solved it. All those crazy gizmos and gadgets, and the simplest thing was the problem.

He try everything he know's on my truck and he didn't find anything wrong. He came with another 2012 fx4 ecoboost yesterday and we were swapping a lot of parts without any results. Here is what he had check:

-Compression: good
-injector leaking test: good
-Catalitic test: good
-swapping iat: nothing
-swapping map: nothing
-swapping tip: nothing
-swapping fuel pressure sensor: nothing
-wastegate actuation: good, no restriction
-wastegate acutator (vacuum applied and see if they move equally): good
-boost level: good as request by the computer even if the boost is only 12psi at maximum (computer request only 12psi maximum and on the other truck it was 16psi at max request???)
-fuel trim: always bad when idle to mid throttle but ok at WOT, he can't find why, but the other truck doesn't do that. (-15% on fuel trim)
-spark plug at 0.031 gap all around (but we didn't change the spark plug, I'll do that this weekend)

So nothing wrong with my truck except for the fuel trim always in negative (nearly -15), the ford tech doesn't know where to look at now... He definitely saw the problem regarding bad MPG because we test drive both truck side by side on the highway but my truck did 4mpg lest of the other one. But he can't find why.

I still have my problem and have lost my mind in that... I don't know what can be done, or what is the problem of some ECO bad MPG.

Goodburon, can you check your fuel trim on the bad one and the good one and see if there is a difference at idle and at WOT?
Did they try a PCM swap? Maybe someone mixed up the dog plasma with the human plasma when they built the truck.

wonder how many will get that reference.

ETA:

It also has the gooseneck hitch installed, and sliding rear window.

Also I've noticed recently on longer uphill pulls with the cruise set. the boost seems to surge and release slowly in a cyclical fashion. The good truck does not do this. Also of note is that my wife has managed to take down the mileage on the good truck to 15mpg, she sucks at driving efficiently... The same that it was on the bad truck. Meanwhile, driving highway miles I've gotten worse mileage than the good truck, except when driving with a tailwind, where it was equivalent.
This is such a long thread I can't remember if you already did this or not, but have you compared gears and rpms when running the trucks side by side at various speeds?

I finally got some results.

10000 miles ago the truck started making a noise, it took several months for Ford to acknowledge that there was a noise, then a week of diagnostics to identify that the noise was a leaking/ warped manifold.

Power is up, economy is up.

i wish i could figure out why my wife's escape with the ecoboost gets crap mileage. She drives it normal, does not beat on it and gets only 17mpg.

If she has the bigger ecoboost in it will not get good milage. The smaller 1.6 get great milage, buddy of mine has one and they just drive. It's down in the 7l/100 Kms range. He doesn't drive for milage but he doesn't have to the floor all the time either.

What kind of noise was it making? Intake or exhaust manifold?

Thanks

We had one as loaner, what great little car!, and didn't do much better than about 19mpg. That was about 35% city and 65% back roads and hwy.

Pedal position and smile factor weighed heavily in that for us. Oh and the remote start to get it warmed up.

I've been getting a stellar 11.6mpg ave since the day I installed WHOPPING 33's on mine.
Mind you, they're only 1/2" taller and wider than the stock tires, and this wheel/tire combo I wanna say are almost 10lbs lighter at each corner.
I went HAWG WILD and tried Monster Truck-ish 35's, and had to reset my mileage indicator every time it reached 10mpg, 'cuz I couldn't stomach facing wherever it was gonna bottom.
Ive had it serviced solely at the dealer and never have had any probs that I'm aware of.
I make it a point to report the **** mpg at every service, but beyond them telling me everything is 'working within spec', that's about all I can do.
Well, besides buying a Golf TDI to drive most of the time now.
The fuggin thing not only pays for itself, but it also puts another $300 in my pocket just driving 12kmi/year, and driving my truck 12kmi LESS

My wife called it the noisy cricket. When the turbos would spool up under acceleration it sounded like cutting into a very hard square peg on a lathe at high speed. Only under boost. Easily identifiable as a turbo noise.

My wife just drove it with a fully loaded bed of horse feed (max capacity) in the mountains and averaged 14mpg.

As to which manifold, I don't know. I tried to find out but the service dept was closed when we picked it up. I'll have to make it there on a weekday to get the printout.
