i recently bought a 2013 f150 w/ecoboost that would not shift int 6th until about 68-70 mph. By pressing the tow/haul button it would shift into 6th after 50mph. i immediately took it back . At first the service dept told me that it was normal and in time the transmission would learn to shift earlier. My dealer had a 3 day money back policy so I threatened if they couldn,t fix it ( the other trucks shifted into 6th at about 50mph) I would bring it back. Short story is they could not fix it even with ford technical help. I took it back and got a 2012 with 5.0. I have been very happy ever since. I have seen others that have had this problem with their ecoboost. My problem with not shifting into 6th was that I would rarely get the benefit of overdrive since much of my driving was under 68-70 mph.

Double checked mine today. It hits around 45mph I said 50-55 earlier. 3:55 gear.

Well they are still working on it. They claimed to have loaded the as built data but it did nothing. They also have 3 other trucks on the lot that are doing this. Mine will also shift to 6th in tow/haul at 50 mph and that is what I have been doing.

If they can't fix it I will just load the tune back into it and just it run it from this point out. It sucks they can't fix this and your story doesn't give me hope. By going back to the tune I can also have my speedo corrected. It is crazy that I need to go to an aftermarket tuning so my truck runs like it supposed to stock and correct the speedo for larger tires LOL

Is this just a ecoboost problem?

This seems to be a design flaw in that if it was fixable we wouldn,t be having this problem. seems to be with some ecoboosts. Its hard to imagine that Ford would design an engine/transmission combination that needs to go close to 70mph before you see the benefit. But the dealers just keep pushing the problem back on unsuspecting customers. I bet there are some out there that don,t even realize their truck is still in 5th gear most of the time. I didn,t notice it at first. Who wants to own a $30k-$50k vehicle that won,t shift into overdrive until 20mph later than it should? And then whats with hitting the tow/haul button to make it upshift? that should do the opposite. Ford should be embarrased about this. If I hadn,t had a dealer with a 3 day money back policy I,d still have the problem. I,m still mad that my dealer tried to tell me this problem was normal and it would correct itself. I love my new truck and think the new f150 is miles ahead of the Silverado I traded in but not happy with dealers service dept.- John

It is not the dealers fault. It is FORD'S. Just like the intercooler, which is FORD'S. Cant blame the dealer for this at all.

Why would this be just an ecoboost problem as all models share the same transmission

This sounds like 100% programming which differs between engines. When Tow/Haul lets it shift earlier than non T/H, there is something wrong with the programming or how things are working with the ECU. Why a re-flash with the same strategy code that works on other trucks doesn't resolve it on these trucks, I have no idea. I assume there is more to these strategies than just speed/rpm/load to allow for shifts, especially with an Ecoboost where it is a combination of speed/rpm/load/boost.

I agree it is a Ford problem but when the dealer service dept tries to pass it off as normal operation rather than admit a problem then it just makes the whole situation worse. Checked my truck yesterday and I was surprised that under light throttle it shifts int 6th at about 44-45 mph. The transmission is sensitive enough to upshift or downshift as needed to achieve max economy at needed rpm. On a flat road with little load best economy will be at the lower rpm the transmission selects. This assumes the transmission is set up properly to begin with as most are. 44-45 mph in 6th gear doesn,t feel like too high a gear with no load. With the slightest push on the throttle it downshifts. - John

Well, I am saying screw Ford on this one. They can keep there games with having me come back in and have no idea what the problem is. Mike @ 5* just hooked me up with a stock tune with the 6th gear issue fixed AND I get my speedometer recalibrated

It feels so good to have the tune back into it.

A special thanks to Mike, he come through again.

So Ford never actually called me to with any updates. So I called them today. Their answer is that this is an normal operating characteristic of this truck.

Bogus!

I can't express how disappointed I am that this is the stance they are taking with this.
