When I test drove the EcoBoost, I noticed there was a big dead spot when just punching it from a stop. I'm sure that's because the turbos weren't spooled up. I noticed the same thing when cruising at a lower speed at times, but other times it would take off pretty dang quick from a roll. Again, I'm assuming it has to do with whether or not the turbos are spooled. I'm new to turbo engines. Can someone explain to me the proper way to spool the turbos to get a quick launch without the huge dead spot in the beginning?

This topic has been discussed many times. The lag is related to the doggy stock tuning, the turbo spool, and the drive-by-wire system.
If you want to get rid of that lag, tune it. My 5star tune got rid of the lag almost completely. Before, you hit the gas, and the truck had to think about it for a minute before it decided to launch you back in the seat. Now, you'll still notice a slight delay as the turbos spool, but when you hit the gas, you go.

Is that the only way to get rid of that big lag....tune it? I'd like to tune the truck eventually, but I want to wait until it's out of warranty. I don't have the truck yet and I don't want to kill the warranty right out of the gate. I knew tuning it would reduce that lag, but I wasn't sure if there was just a proper way to launch it with the turbos. With the Lightning I used to have, I'd just floor it. That just didn't work with the EcoBoost. Difference between supercharger and turbos, I guess.

Tuning is the main thing. My dads 08 corvette used to have the same dead spot when he first got it. We had it tuned and now it responds instantly. Which can make for a fun ride if you aren't prepared for it LOL

There will always be some lag as turbos are spooled by the exhaust. No exhaust gas=no boost. You have to be spinning some RPM's to spool the turbos.
Like said, you can brake-boost it, or just put up with it. Tuning helps take the drive by wire lag out and torque managemnet out but you can't get rid of the turbo lag. But in all honesty, it isn't that bad on these trucks as they have small turbos which spool quicker.

Alright, so using the brakes to get the turbos spooling will help the launch from a stop. That's good to know. I assume there's really nothing that can be done to help it from a roll, other than tuning...? Will simply swapping out the exhaust help the turbos spool quicker?

FWIW, my 10' 3v 4.6 does the same damn thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Just because your foot is on the floor from a stop does not mean your throttle is at 100%. I know my old vehicle limited certain gears in terms of boost and throttle via the Throttle Position Sensor. A tune would take care of this issue.

I have found the fastest way to launch without power breaking, is go about half throttle until 2000rpm, THEN full throttle. Just seems to work. Now the most fun way is tune it then have fun.
