Oh you don't have to listen closely for it. You'll hear it when it happens. I heard mine from my balcony the first time I heard it.

Could lead to catastrophic failure...... "could"
Out of pocket costs is little over $2k

Mine has done it for 100,000 miles, at 182,000 miles currently. I say save the cash if you don't plan on driving it into the ground. I plan on seeing how long it'll go before she blows, hopefully it won't and I'll trade in at 250-300 k miles

Ouch. How much would it take to just replace/rebuild an engine? Might be worth the gamble.

Dealerships and Ford cast the blame on the customer for not changing oil often enough for the timing chain failure design defect, and the customer pays for the repair. The "oil life monitor does not apply in this part of the world" was the message I was given and "you are at fault for poor maintenance". I was never told that there was even a TSB for this issue when I had full warranty coverage. A built in defect to keep the shops busy.

Went through the same denial BS with my 1995 Windstar defective headgaskets 20 years ago, obviously Ford still sings the same crap. Never again..

I disagree with the "built in defect to keep dealerships busy" comment.
I'm not sure what dealerships have been blaming customers but it's pretty well known now and Ford has obviously acknowledged it with the TSB. Now there are dealers out there that are greasy and try to pin all their work on the customer like the first dealer I went to. The second one I went to had it in the next day and done in 2 days without even hearing the rattle.
Timing chains have always been prone to stretching. I wouldn't be so quick to call it a conspiracy...

4-5 times more than just getting the work done. So I'd say it's not worth it at all.

First I have even heard of the issue with my 2014 FX4 with 70k miles as my dealer has never mentioned it before (I don't read the forums if I don't have an issue). Now that its failed, get out the credit card $$$. Only dealer in town so no more Fords for me.

These forums make it seem like the issue is more prevalent than it actually is. The dealerships aren't going to tell you about possible issues, they want you to buy a truck. Same goes with the other brands too.
Ask dodge owners about their transmission issues, for example.
I personally wouldn't let this throw me off Ford. Stuff like this happens. And these motors have only been in trucks for a few years. They're bound to have problems.
