Default Pure FUEL economy - 5.0 or 3.5 EB?

Ford has been pimping the 3.5EB as the "all the power with great fuel economy" motor. Early reports from owners are good, but not the super 23-25mpg folks at the EB Events were claiming. Best I can tell, EB owner reports of +20.0 highway are few and far between.

The 5.0 got buried at launch. No Max Tow, EPA mileage not much better than the old motors, it just seemed like it was going to be the 'also ran' motor. Now that more 5.0's are getting out there, the owners are reporting better mileage than I expected, with a lot of reports of +20.0 highway.

I am beginning to wonder if the 5.0 will be the "Real World" MPG winner. But maybe I am off base -

What say the Forum? Which will get better MPG's 5.0? or 3.5EB?

(FYI, the 3.7 is out for me, I want a Screw 4x4)

I'm not gettting anywhere close to 20mpg with my 5.0. I get around 17.5 on the highway. and 16 with some city thrown in. Either something is wrong with my truck, or people are hyping their numbers, because I'm am not a lead foot.

I have a heavy foot and I love the sound of the 5.0, and I get 15 city and I drive very little highway to measure economy, but on the backroads to my friends farm I have gotten the fuel economy to 20MPG but that was a 55-60 mph. After using the 36 gallon tank I usually average 15-16MPG hand calculated per tank.

Too soon to tell anything yet. My truck (5.0L) now has 1900 miles and hand calculated is roughly 16.8-17.4 mpg combined city/highway and yes this is with a light foot about 70% of the time. Best on highway thus far is 20.2 again with a light foot.

Note: These are not hyped numbers....

20.5 on a straight flat highway run. Last tank 18.1 with some city traffic mixed in. I'm amazed so far at the fuel mileage on this big truck. Just hit 1400 miles on it on my way to work this morning.

I have 5.0 screw 4x4 with 3.73s. Truck has about 950 miles so far and I have hit 20+mpg on the highway. Was on the interstate for 2hrs cruising at 70mph and had 21mpg showing on the lcd (I know some people don't trust the lcd so take it for what its worth). I am currently at 4500ft elevation on vacation and have been driving around town for two days including a trip up to 7000ft and im still showing 18.4mpg. I do drive with a light foot since the truck hasn't hit 1k miles yet but I think this engine is very impressive. It did great with all of the elevation changes.

Oh and the 20+mpgs was at 2k ft elevation and lower.

I am getting 18 in town and 21-24.5 @ 60-65 with a 5.0 regular cab 2wd 3.55 RD when I drive it to get good MPG. Get into it or make short trips where only the cold fuel circuit is in effect and mileage drops quickly.

I think the stock Hemi boys in the 4X4's or longer cab configurations are going to be surprised by this little sleeper.

im driving an ecoboost with 3.73 rear end and im averaging 15 mpg city/highway, about 40% of the daily commute is city the rest is highway. I dont have a lead foot but i wouldnt say im a light foot either. I am not impressed with what the ecoboost is giving me relative to what is claimed by ford but i am happy that the ecoboost is beating the dodge hemi i was driving on the same commute by 2.2 mpg.

5.0 is gonna be better. it's recommended to run premium for the EB (IIRC) so i would say any gain will be negated by the premium fuel cost

Premium is not required. Ecoboost owners however might want to run it on days over 100 degrees when the engine loses a little power
