The little catch pan really does help. I use ramps when changing the oil on my '11 5.0. The catch pan directs all of the oil from the filter towards the rear spout where it is very easy to catch. I am not sure how it behaves with the truck level. I like to use the ramps because I can fit a 5-gallon bucket underneath the truck which makes draining the almost two gallons of oil from the oil pan very easy.

I just changed my oil in my 2011 5.0 for the first time. I did not use ramps. I used two pans, one for the plug and one for the filter and I did not spill a drop. I was actually very impressed, I thought it was a stupid design at first for the oil filter but the "catch pan" did an excellent job in my case of catching all the oil from the filter.

Here's how I've been doing mine on the FX4 (I'm not sure if you have the same skid plate on the king ranch?). I put the front tires on ramps (you could jack up if you want). This helps keep oil from dripping on back onto the skid plate once the oil is almost all the way drained out. Put pan under the drain plug and drain completely, drain plug back in. Put my drain pan forward under the square cut out in the skid plate and loosen the oil filter but not remove. This allows some oil to drain out through the square hole. Once this oil stops I move the drain pan forward so that it is under the square hole and the little spout in front of the oil filter. Then quickly unscrew and tip up to keep any more from draining out of the filter. When I do this I will have oil drain out through the square and from the spout. Wait a minute or two, then dry the drain spout off with shop towels and I'm good to go. I was making a mess of the skid plate until I figured out this sequence. Now it all stays nice and clean for me.

Default Ford Didn't Change It for 2013

Just performed my first oil change this morning and I was glad no one was here to listen to my profanities about the worthless little plastic drip tray under the oil filter. What a POS! I had a 18 inch diameter catchpan, having read previous posts regarding the filter change mess. 18 inches wasn't big enough.

The oil change was performed in my shop - level concrete - and the oil came out the front, as expected, and also the rear. Total mess. I will figure out a fix and post the results. My first observation is that the rear of the tray seems a bit loose and can maybe be permanently tilted up so the tray only discharges oil from the front, like it looks like it should.

Two words to solve the oil drain mess. Fumoto valve. Best $25 upgrade to your truck if you are going to own it for a long time and change your own oil.

I have a valve on every vehicle I own. Have about 12 years of history on them and have never leaked a single drop or had one malfunction in any way. I use the ones with the nipple so I can attach a length of clear hose and run straight to my used oil container. These are aircraft quality, you wont be dissapointed.

How is it to install on a Eco, as I know when fitting a socket on the oil drain plug is kind of a pita. Since theres a fuel line or some sort of metal tube that runs in front of mine on my 2012!

I to have had Fumoto valves on all my cars/trucks and there isn't anything better. Never a issue, makes it much cleaner to change oil.
