Default Oil change frequency on EcoBoost?

I first had the oil changed in my EcoBoost at around 5,500 miles. The Ford dealer suggested I come back after another 5,000 miles (10,500).

Last week, the truck computer told me to "Change Oil Soon", and a few days later (only 100 miles later) has escalated the message to "Oil Change Required". The interesting thing is, the truck only has 8,700 miles. This seems a little soon to change the oil again.

A few things to point out:
  • I live in Texas with 95 degree+ temperatures for the past 3 months
  • I have larger and heavier tires than stock (BF Goodrich All-Terrain KOs 265/55/20)
  • I installed the 5 Star 93 Perf/Tow tune about a month ago

Would any of these factors cause the oil to need to be changed so soon? Does the dealer control the truck reminder message, or is it the truck oil sensors that tell the on-board computer to alert me?

So, how many miles did you put on the new oil after leaving the dealership before the message to change oil came on? About 3,200?
If it was only that couple of thousand, then I expect that the dealership forgot to set your oil life back to 100% when they changed it. It happened to me several times, and I now always check when I leave the dealer after getting the oil done. I always change mine at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of what the oil life monitor says.

Yes, It has only been 3,200 miles. Can only the dealer reset the interval, or can we? I'm sick and tired of having to clear the message each time I start the truck.

You can reset it. Look for instructions in the owners manual. I always reset mine to 60% which gives me about 6000 miles between oil changes.

Go to settings, you can put it to as many percent as you want...they just forgot.

Wow. If my math is correct, that would mean the normal interval would be 10,000 miles. Seems a little longer than I'd want to wait.

I changed mine at 5000km and the oil life monitor said I still had 75% life on the oil, I was like WTF the oil is black as night, I dont know if I really trust the monitor.

I made my first change at 5000 just to get the free one out of the way, but gave them 6qts of 5W-30 Mobil One to do it with so I got the oil I wanted and they got the weight required by the EB engine. My next change was 7500 miles later with 30% life left and that is the interval I plan to keep.
They obviously forgot to reset the oil life indicator. Just set it to about 50% for now and check it before and after the next change.

Oil is not measured in weight, it is measured in viscosity grade. That W means Winter or colder temp viscosity. Not picking, just informing.

It is really up to you OP or anyone else on what you want to run it to. I feel safe for 7,500 after running a few oil analysis on past oil changes. I can go longer but I am comfortable with 7,500 miles on pure synthetic. The reason you are able to go longer with these newer engines is due to their full flow oil filter that 100% of your oil is ran through as opposed to only a portion as was the case with older engines. Remember, oil never really goes bad as long it isn't burnt at too high temps or is overly contaminated with coolant, fuel, and so on. The additives in the oil may be depleted, but the oil itself is still good as long as the contaminants are filtered out properly. Just because oil is black does not mean it is bad. It just means it is doing it's job in collecting and keeping contaminants so they can be filtered through your oil filter. Of course your oil filter cannot filter out 100% of the very fine small contaminants like carbon and such which is the black you see in the oil. At that size, it is not something to worry about hurting your engine. It is really up to you OP on when you want to do but I would not recommend anything sooner than 5,000 to help out your wallet on not needed expenses or anything later than 10,000 to help out your engine.
