Ah, yes my truck does this too. The earliest gear that you will get converter lockup is third I believe. What's annoying is when the lockup happens too early in gear as you're trying to accelerate up a hill.

yup as others have said it's the converter locking up. One reason why if I have a load behind me I'll just hold second longer...or put it in tow/haul because it waits a little longer to lockup and I don't notice it as much at higher rpm. Thank the EPA!

Yup, that is the converter locking up. That is normal.
