I think you are over thinking the octane thing..
Fuel and it's octane is really only designed for the burn rate and energy stored in it (ya we can start a whole octane thread based on these comments haha). The higher the octane the more power you can pull out of the engine either through timing or other perameters. The big difference is the tune that is set on it to run at what octane, you will not feel a difference in octane alone from 87 to 93 by seat of the pants UNLESS the engine is being setup to manage the added octane and produce power rated to it.
For exmaple on m high performance snowmobile, if I run 87 or 91 in it, depending on what tune I have set in the mapping it will run the exact same. If I change the "ethanol resistor" to the 91 and have 91 in it, she runs much better.
It would be safe to run the 87+ octane in the 87 tune but just not the other way around, you will get detonation pretty easy that way.
Can't wait to hear your review on this... my truck shows up July 3rd as an ETA and I still haven't decided on a tune yet, but am leaning towards Ricks especially if it sounds like the tuner will be updated in the future to hold more data!

That were I put me sticker. Let them wonder why I am a lot faster then they are!! Plus I do so work for the dealership that I bought the truck from I rather they did not see it.
