Perhaps you misunderstood my post.
I was saying that the mpg spread wouldn't be 15mpg if the only variable is oem gearing. Try to be realistic.
I am not worried about mileage, I'm far happier now than I was with my 5.4 at 12-14 tops.
Don't get all hot and bothered, but you should make sure your math is at least semi-accurate before going all emo.
The unaccounted for variables in your two extremes would include the additional weight of a front diff, cab size, interior options, etc... So, theoretically, the mpg spread COULD be 15mpg if you compared a bare bones 2wd to a fully loaded 4wd. But then we're no longer comparing apples to apples.

I have some 29600 miles on my Ecoboost. My overall life time average is 18.6 mpg. For the first 12-13000 miles I could only manage at best 17.7 average mpg, that with a combination of city and mostly highway ( 55+ mph ). The best fuel milage I got out of a tank during those milage was 20.1 mpg. As time and milage went along my milage has improve now to a lifetime average of 18.6 and over this past summer I average 20+ mpg. Granted this summer was very warm where I live ( unusually warm ). The best tank I had was 23.1 mpg.

Tips to increase mileage on ecoboost.
1. When I brought ecoboost in May 2012, I was getting 12 / 17 mpg. until 600 miles.
2. Then I changed air filter i used airaid. Man that changed the a lot, slowly it increased 14 / 18 mpg until 2000 miles.
3. Then I changed the exhaust aero turbine its now 17 /20.5 for continuous 550 miles. and I am now 4200 miles.(60-75 mph)
4. Brought SCT sf3 in between no use it was 14 /17 all the time.
5. Changed wheels but not tires. 18 inch diesel. Found no change in fuel mileage.
5. After all these are turbo's , more powered, more power need more gas. I am so happy with ecoboost with no issues.
6. Next project, heard from a turbo expert that hydrogen/nitrous injection can significantly increases turbos upto 30mpg for trucks and 40mpg for cars.

Some of you guys are rough, "Ahh its a truck, quit complaining"
Yep its a truck with EPA estimates posted on it just like a car. It's not a superduty in which their not posted. Some of us have had past experiences of beating EPA numbers, yet not with our new truck. My frustration is that they should make the EPA numbers on trucks with all the different gearing options clearer, not based on the smallest and lightest truck. Its about like advertising a window price of 25K on a fully loaded truck 4x4 and all and then after then fact saying "Oh that price is actually for the base model even though it's on the deluxe, actual price is 50K." I know all manufacturers do it, and yes maybe we should research further.
Jknight - sounds like you have the same truck as I do, my average is about 16.5. One thing that hurts mine is the grade I climb to and from work, but even at that I really think mine should be better especially since 90% is hwy.
Got a buddy with a XLT 3.31 4x4 Eco scab 6.5' bed bone stock that normally runs 21.5 mpg. He drives conservatively, but by no means does he even attempt to hypermile, hell he's given me crap about my 'grandpa' driving...

Living in PA our terrain in rolling so it doesn't help with fuel mileage. I got the 3.73 gears hoping it would help with keeping it in overdrive longer. The throttle is very sensitive in these trucks. I filled up yesterday with mostly highway miles. The display showed 15.1 and hand calculated it was 14.7. I was hoping for better. I will continue to watch to see if someone find a fix.
Engineermike, If you are ever in the Harrisburg PA area let me know. I would like you to drive my truck to see if you have any input.
Thanks everyone for your troubles.

My ecoboost originally got 21 until 12k and now 17 is about the best I can do. It started dropping when the rough mpg showed up. Flat land mostly here in Texas and the same trips I made in the past getting 21 now only yield 17.

I think the OP will not be happy until he ditches his current truck and buys a new one... that is until he finds out what the real world fuel mileage is on the new truck!
Just for reference, my previous truck was a cramped little Toyota Tacoma crew cab, V6, 4x4... averaged 15-16mpg on an overall basis. If a tank had mostly run-around-town, it dropped down to 13-14mpg. At its best (100% highway... driving at reasonable speeds) it got 20-21mpg.
So what is one to expect out of a much larger, taller, with bigger tires, 6000+ pound truck with big ol' dumbo ear mirrors (BTW - I love them)... Let's do some math with our trucks and the EPA numbers...
I am willing to admit that I would like to get better fuel economy... but I also realize that what I'm getting is about what I deserve considering what I'm driving!
As for those guys claiming an overall lifetime 20ish mpg with a crew cab, 4x4, long bed, trailer tow package... They are:

- Full size truck = considerable mpg loss
- Crew cab = considerable mpg loss
- 4x4 = considerable mpg loss
- Trailer tow mirrors = mpg loss
- 275 55R 20 wheels/ tires = mpg loss (compare w/ Tacoma's 265 65R 17)
- Not being a solo 150# passenger = mpg loss

- Lying... or
- One of those %#@&^* California Prius drivers that are always driving 55mph in a 65 zone and will not get out of the fast lane... or
- Smoking California "medicine"... or
- All of the above!

Just got a 2013 Lariat 4x4, Supercrew, 6.5'bed, 3.73, hd tow, off road, and my mileage sucks. Only have 800 miles on it. Re-set MPG guage on interstate while running 77, it got 14.1. Cruised 15 miles today on highway, not even a bump on brakes at 65 got 14.8. My 2010, same exact packages and truck with 5.4 got better mileage. Loved that 5.4 liter. Maybe it will loosen up some, but I doubt very much. Turning 2000rpm at 77mph on flat ground
