Is my Ruby '13 sick?
Good Evening and thanks for looking!
I have a 2013 F150 SuperCrew with the 5.0
I have noticed the "infamous" engine tick in our engine and spent some time researching it online and also sent a note to our salesman with our concern earlier today.
As stated, I spent some time reading some interesting articles with people who have had the same issue with their 5.0's and did what some had suggested such as checking the oil level.
The oil level is a bit odd - it's way past the full line but there is a significant gap between the empty/full to where it tails off. While checking, I caught a whiff of gas and smelt the dip stick and my wife said that she could even smell it from across the garage. Is this normal or am I beginning to regret trading in my Lexus for my F150?
The exhaust also has a very pungent gas smell, very sweet and it lingers.
Love our new truck - LOVE IT! Just really concerned now regarding this engine tick and smell both in the oil and the exhaust.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks very much for the input - we are planning to get it in right away.
It leaves a really sweet gas-like odour in our garage as well for hours and we don't run it in the garage at all. It smells like unspent fuel mixed with something.
I will update as soon as we get it in for service.
Thanks again!

Hi there,
Yes, removed and wiped with a clean cloth three separate times, same distinct smell every time. Even had my wife smell just to make sure it wasn't "just me".
Thanks!

*Update*
Unable to get me until June 7 - so I am okay with that, still drives like a dream and not so embarrassing if I just keep the windows rolled up
Will update once Tech has a chance to look at it.
Cheers!

You also might be smelling ethanol although I was never able to smell it in my exhaust until I started exclusively running E85.
How many miles do you have on your 5.0? While mine was still breaking in and consuming massive amounts of oil, I also noticed quite a pungent gasoline odor in the fuel. Now that my engine has stopped consuming oil, I also noticed that the engine oil stopped smelling of fuel.
As far as checking the oil goes, that is normal if you don't let your vehicle sit for a long time before checking the oil. I really wish Ford would just get rid of dipsticks and start using a oil level sensor like some European cars use. Oil just runs up the tube and takes a long time to drip back, hence that large gap between the oil streak on the stick. I am usually able to get my most accurate readings when the vehicle has had a chance to sit for at least a couple hours.
The ticking noise(if it is the infamous tap tap tap and not the fuel injector ticking) has been discussed but it doesn't appear to be causing any harm from what we can see. Mine comes and goes and always goes away after the engine warms up.
