Default EB 2011 3.73 RD 8ft. bed max tow

Started with 1600 miles on it, pulling from Toronto outbound for 53 days pulling a 21 ft. 2012 Minilite Rockwood trailer.

Thank you for the ideas.
High steady winds drop it to 8 mpg highway driving all the way.Driving at 75 miles per hour so we could slow down to 60-65 and see if there is any difference. Travelling behind a semi gets it up to 14 but this is too dangerous.

We can try premium and see if the ethanol additive is helping to produce lower mpg.

We will visit a Denver Dealership to see if the ECU can be reset. Otherwise
it reminds me of having a fantastic looking vehicle that one can drive up and down the main street of town a few times each night then 'Hey who's got money for gas?"

The thrust of the TV commercials for the ECOBOOST is saving money. I can't see anything mechanical that can be done with this F150 that would get its mpg rate to an acceptable level.

Best truck I've ever had re. driving, tow/haul, max. tow. power, quiet ride, etc..... but becoming the worst car re. economy. Will update this forum after the dealership.

75mph is way fast to expect any kind of fuel economy with that load.

Expect significant savings in the 60-65 mph range.

Im not sure if I drive this much harder than you all, but my 1st tank I got 13.2 mpg in my EB scab, 3.55 4x4.
Im showing about the same 1/2 way through the second.
My cap is about 200 lbs, and about the same in tools.
I have done some wide open throttle stuff and I dont feather the throttle.
Are you guys seeing 20 really concentrating on fuel economy when you drive?
I have reset the eco meter and driven granny style, and can't seem to do much better than 15.
I cannot fathom how I would get 20.

Don't expect much mileage until you get some miles on your truck. I just got over 3000 miles and my average keeps getting better. The first couple of tanks of fuel were not very good. I am at 16.5 driving short trips with lots of stops (about the worst for economy) and that is accelerating normally, not like a granny.

Dont get too caught up in the mileage quirp. I test drove an ecoboost, even towed my boat with one to get real world aspect. This was a demo and had just over 1K miles on it when I drove it. It was a XLT 4X4 screw with 3.73. Averaged 14/15 around town, got 19 on a short flat hwy trip of about 15 miles and got 11/12 towing a 3500 lb boat. I put about 150 miles on this truck before making my decision. NOTE: this is in the mountains/hills 2700ft elev.. Also Im not saying this is bad mileage, just what I observed.

Remember some good points that effect mileage:
  1. General area you drive/ mountains vs flatland, elevation, etc...
  2. Type and size of truck, gearing, etc...
  3. and most important, some folks are full of (shi?)
For the average Joe who tows on occassion, and the EB is their daily driver, the EB is a sweet engine. For someone who bought this for heavy daily towing is going to make OPEC very happy.... Boost = Juice......Should have ante'd up for a diesel??

Well put.
Boost = juice.
I do like me some boost in my life.
If I didn't I'd have 3.7.
Most interested in this 3000 mile thing.
It is just hard to read this huge disparity and wonder why?
I recon it has to be driving style.
Mind you, 13.5 is what I got in all (4) of my 5.4.
This EB is so much better than 5.4 I'd be happy with it at less milage.

Eelslayker,
I have a xlt supercab with 8 foot box and 3.73 gears.
Now have 3400km on it. Towed my 31 foot Airstream to Cleveland from Mississauga last week. Drove 58 mph and got 12mpg on the dash readout. Remember that this readout is in American gallons. To get mpg for Imperial gallons multiply by 1.2.
That means I got 14.4 mpg(Imperial).
That is more than 2mpg better than I ever got towing that trailer with my 5.4 in a e150 van.
Without the trailer my mileage is huge compared to the old van.
And way more power available.
Also towing I drove in regular drive and used all six gears. Only downshifted to fifth on some of the hills. They aren't huge.
If not in big hills using Tow/Haul is not necessary and only uses more fuel.
If it downshifts too often, then use it.
Al

Default Direct Comparison of Ecoboost to 2004 5.4

I drove back with my son from Arizona to TX yesterday. He was driving my 2004 F150 5.4L (136,000 miles) that I gave him, and I was driving my 2011 Ecoboost (1500 miles). Both 2WD, both Super Crew. The 2004 has 18" wheels, the 2011 has 20 inchers and 3.55 gears. I only accurately recorded the mileage for the last half of the trip. Had a pretty good tailwind. During the day we were keeping it up at 80MPH on IH-10 (legal limit), and dropped to ~60 MPH on the second half of the trip at night.

Interesting that at 80MPH there was only about a 1MPG difference, but when speed dropped the EB MPG went way up. I'm guessing that's due to less turbo use. Temp started at high 80's, dropped to 70's at end of the trip at 2AM. I put down the computer MPG readouts but I'm still not sure how the EB calculates (I have it set to "last 5 resets"). The 2004 was showing 18.8MPG, the 2011 19.5.

Bubba

Van Horn, TX to Sonora, TX
259 Miles @ ~80MPH
2004 5.4L 14.1 Gals, 18.4 MPG
2011 EB 13.3 Gals, 19.5 MPG

Sonora, TX to Georgetown, TX
196 Miles @ ~60MPH
2004 5.4L 10.6 Gals, 18.5 MPG
2011 EB 8.9 Gals, 22.0 MPG

Nice work. At slower speeds the ecoboost is approaching the 20% better mileage that Ford claims over the outgoing model, though your 5.4 is not the 2010 for that comparison. Were they both the same size truck? ie: crew, supercab, 6.5 box, tire size?

Did a 60 mile run through the freeways north of Detroit a couple days ago. Was doing min of 70 all the way up to 82 and averaged 20.5 strictly hwy. The freeway is recessed between two service drives and a few small tunnels. This mpg would not happen in normal land level highway environment around here. The rpms were around 2200 max at a few points. I believe this just goes to show the great (2-3mpg) variance you can see with environment change. With the 3.73 I was expecting 17-18, was in a hurry that day. I'm thinking real mileage is 17- 23 hwy, philosophically speaking. I think it was Lao Tzu who said "That which is real never changes." Head wind, tail wind, side wind, rolling hills, recessed freeways, tight traffic slipstreams, these change everything. Real is always changing. Ymmv.
