She got 10% worse mileage and most wouldn't even be able to tell a difference in our driving styles. Imagine how drastic the difference would be if there was an big or even obvious difference in driving style!
- I've achieved 20+% variation on my 9 mile drive to work, just affected by whether or not I got caught by the 2 red lights or if a car stopped to turn in front of me.
The EB has wideband O2 sensors, so the 'soot' is probably just a byproduct of dynamic fuel control to a target AFR... Every time there is a rapid change in throttle, it will take a small amount of time to get the AFRs back to the target. When I watch the AFR, I certainly see moments of rich AFR at throttle tip in, followed by tight regulation back to a target.

I ran an AEM EMS with a PLX wideband (on a custom Honda turbo that I used to race) and it would allow closed-loop control to a target AFR at any load point, and it operated much the way the Ford EB does... Pretty impressive actually.

Back in the 90's I used to work on cars and trucks. Replaced quite a few turbos too on cars not designed from the ground up to support them. Subahoos and Dodges to name a few. I really didn't know what the wastegate did or how it worked until I had my own Powerstroke and started messing with the tuning and stuff. When I started to adjust the timing of the MAP, and other devices, it was then that I understood fully the function of the wastegate. Makes a difference on when it opens and closes, and how quickly things can go south if pushed too far.

I also discovered how quickly a poor seal on the airbox can wear down the turbine blades on the compressor wheel. Hence my rant when ever I see someone brag about putting a K&N on their EB. At least the one on the PS was easy to get to and replace, I would HATE to have to replace both turbines on the EB, that looks like a major undertaking to get those apart.

FWIW the EB is a really well thought out power plant, and there are some that get great FE, while others are average, and some are down right awful. Mine falls in the middle, the one in the Flex, while not the exact same engine, the design is basically the same, the exception being the intake, cam timing, and a few other minor differences, that engine performed Great, had really good FE for how I drove it, and was smooth as silk.

God how I wish the F150 was like that. Mine is rough at idle at times and can go through gas rather quickly if I drove it like I did the Flex.

Considering however, the added weight, added frontal drag, and higher overall COD of the F150, it does pretty well for a small engine that can out pull every other 1/2 ton out there.

This is the kind of activity that i need on this blog. Scientific answers to a complex problem. Even though there is probably not an answer that would correct a problem, the subjective knowledge is certainly better than people telling other people they make too many comments about their EB. Kudo's to you "engineers."

2012 screw 4x4 3.55...
Lifetime average (~2500 miles) is 18.5mpg with 80/20 city hwy. I get about 19.5 on a tank during daily commute if I try and drive as "fluid" as possible. If I drive like more aggressively it will drop to 15mpg per tank. I would agree the truck is very sensitive to the driving style. Not saying that there isn’t a problem with ecoboost mpg but this is my experience so far.

2012 FX2 Super Crew 6.5'
18" Stock
3.55 Gears
Roll N Lock bed cover

I only have 1800 miles and I have been averaging 21.5mpg in Houston. 25% city 75% hwy. I'm super happy with the results so far.

I averaged 25mpg for 30+ miles cruising 55mph on back roads with no wind or hills

2011 4x4 crewcab with 3.55 gears
Aftermarket 18x9 with 33 nitto
I have had the truck for 1 year have put 4700 miles on it. The fuel mileage has gotten better every month in the city. I was getting 13 city 21 hwy with stocks for the first two months dropped to 12 city 19 hwy with 33s averaged 14 to 14.5 per tank. Now it is getting 16 to 16.5 90% city 10% hwy every tank.

Must be nice my truck is 100% bone stock and my mileage is going south the first day i got the truck i was reading 18.5. 9000 miles later im struggling to get 15. Thats 30% city the rest highway. Im getting very frustrated. 2011 eb screw 6.5 fx4 w/ 3.73 and 20s.

I am not an engineer so what I say is only from experience. I am curious why most here have 4X4's? And why most have chosen 3.55 and 3.73 rear axles? I am not putting anyone down for it by no means. But it is like buying a snow blower for some. You just never use it. All those moving parts to wear out and consume fuel etc.

The best deal I got on 2011 was because it was on the truck and hadn't been delivered yet... Wouldn't have ordered one with 3.15 ratio but glad that is what I got now..... My delivered price was $28,000 best money I have ever spent on a truck.

I have had mine now for 11 months have had no problems at all. 15,000 miles and have averaged 19.1 MPG. I haven't pulled my fifth wheel but 300 miles so far. But when I have the power is just amazing. I run in tow haul fifth gear 65 MPH 1900 rpm's. Never downshifts but then we don't have mountains here in Kansas just wind......

This engine runs like gas but pulls as well as any diesel I have ever driven...... With that said diesels get their power at low rpm's. The next time a tractor trailer rig passes you roll down the window and listen they are not turning 4,000 rpm's most likely less than 2500. I can always tell when a cat passes me. It sounds like it is just idling.

I think IMO driving habits have a lot to do with MPG.. Stop and go are killers, braking at the last second, lead foot. But then who can resist at times when this truck will beat most stock cars and trucks off the line.

When you coast fuel is cut off at the injectors so coasting is good...... I also slow down when I am going into a head wind. Never over 70mph if I am pushing wind. 30 MPH head wind 17.5 MPG 30 MPH tail wind 28 MPG.

Time will only tell how good they are. It will be interesting to see what we have after they have 100,000 miles on them. I am hoping good so our resell will be high.

I looked at a 2013 Lariat the other day when my friend was buying a car..... Loaded with everything...... $52,000!
