I have a 2012 XLT super cab 4x4 with 3.73 gears. I seem to average just under 20 mpg daily driving on rural roads in central Illinois. Last week I went on a 1,500 mile trip to the UP and averaged high 18 mpg's. Speeds were low to mid 70's and only hauling 4 people and some light gear. The truck was in the 7,000 mile range for total milage. I will say that I was thinking the performance and the milage seem to be trailing off a little as I am over 8,000 miles. But I was just telling myself that I'm just getting used to it.
My last truck was an '08 Super cab XLT 4x4, with the 4.6, what a gas guzzling dog that was.

This is crazy. I'm lucky to get 16 daily driving and hardly do any better on the Highway. What is it that makes these trucks deviate so much!

The only difference between our trucks is mine is a Screw.

It's not the Screw, mine is a Scab and my mpgs went to crap.

Something is broke on our trucks but sadly when Ford will accept anything from 10-25mpg as normal, they won't even try to fix it.

Meanwhile, I can't afford to keep dumping gas in it. Current tank is 13.8.

Does yours have rough idle? My rough idle started or at least I first noticed it when I lost my mpgs too. I think they are related.

Mine does not have rough idle. I Did have rough shifting, took it in they did a relearn and flashed the PCM and it's still shifting rough.

Has anyone taken theirs to the dealer to complain about bad MPG? I'm afraid they would just laugh me out of the place.

When I first started blogging on this forum, the forum pages were at 177, now they are at 221 and most of those 221 pages are full of the same crap that you have indicated. If I were you I would skim some of the earlier pages to get a feel for what the problem is. In a nutshell, some or almost most EB drivers started out getting reasonable milage and then something happens. The engine goes rough, milage goes to hell. Some owners never experience any problem. In my case, I have NEVER had good milage I am at 16 now for this tankful most of that is spent averaging 40 mph going to work with ONE stop sign for five miles. If I go to wallyworld that is 50mph with one stop light, and I still cannot get over 16.

People have tried premium with various results. Some have tried using ETOHFree gas. I refuse to put more expensive gas in my car, that defeats the purpose of purchasing the EB.

I have taken mine to the dealer, had the EPROM reflashed for a pissy shifting transmission and a clunky rear end. The milage did not change.

The real crappy deal is that in the 2011 Ford put a 27 gallon tank in all of their trucks, including the short bed Super Duty. In 2012, Ford put the 36 gallon tank back in the F150 but still keeps a 27 gallon tank in the SD SB. Go figure. If I'm pulling my enclosed aero trailer I get 9 mpg which means I have to stop for gas about every 200 miles. When I had my 5.4 with a 36 gallon tank I could go for almost 400 miles since I got better towing milage with my 5.4 than I do with my EB.

My dealership is not saying what most dealers are about the EB performing the way they anticipated, they are quite honest about the variation of fuel economy. Three employee's purchased the EB 150 in various configurations and all, and I mean all of them are not getting either 17 or 22 in their vehicles. They tell people now that the EB will only get 1mpg more than the 5.0 and if they want to spend the extra $750 for the engine then knock yourself out. They really push the 5.0 only because it does not have a turbo and consequently the engine is not as complicated. The 5.0 has milage that is much better than the old 5.4 but with the same pulling power. The EB's only advantage is that it can pull a building off its foundation and never sweat a drop.

Like most Ford drivers like myself, we were looking forward to finally getting an engine that can outperform GM's V8's and get better gas milage. Unfortunately, only the first half of that need is achieved. I'm seriously thinking of changing out my gas tank for a 36 gallon, It will cost me about $300. Or I might wait for the new SD to come out in the fall. The only problem is that its fuel tank is only 27 gallons unless I get a long bed. The advantage for using diesel is that you can install a 30 to 90 gallon tank in the bed and still be legal to drive on US highways.

Hope this helps. I would peruse through some of the earlier posts on this blog, you might get some idea of what is causing crappy milage. One idea is moister in the turbo. By getting your engine above 5000 for a short period of time blows out that water and supposedly the milage gets better. That sounds like voodoo science to me.

My 2011 Ecoboost ( Supercab, 3:73 gears with all options except 20" wheels ) could never get any better than 14.9 m.p.g. Pulling a low profile motorcycle trailer with 2 full dressers I would get 7-8 m.p.g. After trying everything I could think of in the 23,000 miles I had it ( in 9 months ) I traded for a F-350 Crew cab diesel with most all options $62,600 list. The mileage has been 17 to 18 since I picked it up. My dealer on the Ecoboost even had a factory engineer drive it and had a list of things to try ( nothing made any difference ). Went through the reflash of the computer, a new turbo and something with the waste gate and vaccume.

I will admit that my EB is about the same, or a bit thirstier than our 2010 5.4 when towing our 9,000 pound TT.....yesterday, towing into a very strong headwind and climbing slightly (a couple of thosand feet over 300 miles) we got 7.4 mpg......but when unloaded.......we routinely get 18 to 23 mpg at about 55 to 60 mph.
Towing mpg is really as expected though, because if you think about it, the EB IS only 214 cubic inches, and you are working that small an engine pretty hard when towing any significant weight.....
We only have a couple of thousand miles on our 2012, but I had the dealer do the condensation reflash before we took delivery (without the intercooler deflector), and so far, so good. I sure hope my mpg stay where they are as the engine ages....the EB does seem to run very rich though, as the inside of the tailpipe is pretty dark.

Did the EB feel stronger towing that load than the 5.4?

my parents Screw LB 3.55's has 25,000 on it now and our last venture through the bighorns(climbing from 3,000 ft to 12,000 ft up a 10% grade and back down plus putting around the mountain roads yielded 17mpg) they average 20 hwy at 75 and 21-23 at 65-70 all hand calculated

Our little VW GTI is also turbo charged and direct injected. Tail pipes are pretty black, and fuel mileage isn't what I had hoped for either. But we have hit 33 mpg, that's what highway mileage was for it on the window sticker. Mostly the little car gets 27, still ok, but should be better. Now my Eco, said 21 on the window sticker. Best I've hit was 18.4 on a road trip, but that's normal over 70 mph driving. Still better than any other gas truck I've had. Lifetime average is 15.7 mpg, and that's with some very light towing too.
