Default Anyone do a EB tune for e85 or e85/87 mix?

Just curious if anyone here has began looking into running a mix of e85 on these trucks. A little background on why I'm asking. I came from a 135i and 335xi before going with my f150(just bought it this weekend). I ran an e85 mix tune on those cars which are direct injected straight 6 twin turbo motors and a few of the tune vendors that support that community have really adopted the use of these mix tunes. Cobb, BMS, Vishnu to name the big 3. Cobb is most like SCT or Livernois in that it's a flash tune and as such the stoich AFR can be set statically for whatever percentage of mix you are using whereas the BMS and Vishnu are piggy back tunes on the canbus and 'autotune' with the mix of ethanol and can vary widely. The piggys can go straight 93, then e30, then e50, then back to 93 like a flexfuel setup but without the inline sensor instead they perform constant logging and on the fly adjustment based off of fuel trims, kr, pulled timing, boost pressure, etc. Both have their pro's and cons, but they both have proved to make great power and also be very knock resistant at higher boost/timing levels.

For example. This guys car has a tune only with an intake and inline fuel pump. The delta gain for e60 BMS tune from 93 octane stock tune is over 140whp and 150wtq. Typical tune only 93 octane gains on those n54 motors are about what you'd see with the ecoboost motors(60-70whp).

Anyway, I am a big fan of ethanol based fuels even when using it modestly like e30. Yeah it's a little bit of a pain to find a station and pump twice but I never had an issue with it when I buried my foot into the gas pedal.

Are any of the big tune vendors looking into this as an option? Have HPTuners, will log.

I'm also coming from a heavily modded '08 335xi, and I emailed Livernois about this exact idea. Here was their response:

Unfortunately, we do not offer E85 tuning as the fuel itself, while it can be great, degrades far too rapidly for us to be able to trust, or recommend. Couple that with the need for ~30% more fuel than gasoline and the Ecoboost engines are out of fuel system. Case in point, a 2010+ SHO is essentially out of fuel system with full bolt ons and our tune, and it is not using 30% more fuel at WOT to do so, it's less than that. so just for E85 to be in an ecoboost at stock power levels basically maxes it out.

Thanks,

It's like the same limitations in the bimmers. That is why people run a mix instead of straight e85. Pump gas already comes with 10% ethanol added to it and mixing in up to 30% ethanol shouldn't max out the fueling. Yeah going straight e85 requires 30% more fueling to reach stoichometry but a lesser mix not so much. As for the degradation, yeah, ethanol based fuels tend to absorb water from atmosphere, but that would require the gas tank to not seal. As said before all pump gas fuels have ethanol on it. Not 85%, but still it's not nearly as big of an issue as people think. I kept 55 gallons in a drum for the better part of a year with no issue although it was tightly sealed

I'll try to pose the question to ssi. Just curious if anyone has done it yet. E85 is like 'poor mans' race gas for turbo motors.

It was easy on the BMW's with the JB4 because it had an autotune map. It would adjust to whatever you put in it. We don't have that luxury with tuning on the F-150.

I know Joewee3.5 has a few times.
Shawn at SSI will be able to do anything you want. He will make you a tune, then make you data log it to make sure everything is doing what its suppose to be doing (No one else does this). Thats how he has come up with the best tunes for the EcoBoost, having my boy ^^Boostedlimited, Corey, do hours and hours of data logging. He has been tuning since the late 80s early 90s, and specializes in boosted engines. I PM'ed you his number, give him a call. He's a real cool guy to talk to.
