I see about the same mpg in my 2005 fx4. Best city has probably been about 11.5 and best highway has been 15... And that was a pleasant surprise to me. I want to say that I've seen these 4x4 trucks oem rated for 12 city and 14 highway when I was searching for mine. But then again, I have a 5.4.

The reality here is that even if the trucks were spec'd out the same, you can easily see a 2mpg difference between them. In this case, the trucks are not the same and it just happens that the one that gets worse mileage happens to also have additional drivetrain losses and heavier wheels/tires...and that only compounds the difference.

And that said, I'm not sure I could possibly hit 11-12mpg city in my truck if I tried.

THIS will cost you way more than any gain in gas milage. Do not fool yourself, do the math! What kind of a hit will you take by changing vehicles?

Swap trucks for a week... Then check mileage..

While i was in the hospital, my dad drove my truck for over a week and he was getting 5 to 6 more mpg then me in it. We work at the same place...He was driving the same route. The only difference was him driving, And he gets free fuel at work.

I would go with the fact that there is the transfer case, along with the extra weight that comes with it. Also the tire height and tread pattern will make a difference. I'm pretty sure the 4x4 also normally sits about 2-4 inches higher then the 4x2 which also will effect the mileage on the highway due to air resistance. Even the window stickers between the same truck 4x2 and 4x4 claim different gas mpg's. The only question i have is why do you have a 4x4?

I filled up with gas today, then i drove 100 miles.80 of those miles were Highway,in the 100 miles i used 4.8 gallons of gas. That would be 20.83 mpg.2011 F-150 Supercab 4X4 EcoBoost V-6,3.55 LS rear axle,Stock tires and all stock. The temperature outside was 28-32 degrees and the 80 highway miles was 60-70 mph.

Later Mark.

Hey Matt - I actually started a thread because I could not find anyone with my gear ratio and AWD and then happened across your signature

I have a 2013 screw Lariat 4x4 5.5 box (has AWD and 4wd high and 4wd low) with 3.5L Ecoboost, 3.55 locking rear end, and I swapped out tires when I first got it to Good Year Silent Armor LT285/70 R18 @ 60 psi. I get 16mpg on the highway whether I am traveling at 65mph or 80mph. My Dad has the 2012 XLT version of my truck with stock 285/65R18 and a 3.31 rear end and he gets 22mpg while doing 75mph..... I talked to Goodyear and they claim my highway mileage should be the same compared to stock (tread cause decrease but larger diameter causes increase = wash). Really interested if anyone has my drive train with AWD with stock tires or heavier LT tires and what mpg is looking like. Curious how things are going on your end now

I get 11-12 city on my boost screw 4x4. But I'm on the gas all of the time. Less than 2 miles from work and I get 5 lights. So it's gas and slow gas and slow all the way to work.
Highway miles I get over 20 if I leave just under 70 which runs roughly 16-1700 rpm. So my mpg issue is my foot. Not saying things are equal but I drive pretty conservatively compared to others.

Don't get me wrong I love to get on it once in a while but not too often.

Not to hijack the thread here.....but I'm running the exact same, with the same results. When my old man had the truck, he averaged over 14 all the time.
Back to the current topic:
Could be no matter what the differences are in the trucks, driving style is causing the difference? I know the OP said they swapped and the MPGs stayed the same, but for how long? For the lifetime average to change much, you need a significant difference over an equally long period of time.

Dad and I both use cruise on the highway and made the exact same trip - about 200 miles between our houses.
As far as in town driving, I have been driving this thing like it is made of glass. Foot off gas coasting for red lights, no quick starts, under 2,000 RPM all the time, etc. I can actually get 16.6 mpg in town if I watch it even with the heavier tires. I live 4.1 miles from work with 5 lights at 40-45mpg and get 16.5mpg. Max is 16 +/- 0.2 when running on highway at any speed between 65 and 80.....
