Eco spark plug gap
#971
Well just got back in from doing it. Took me about 45 minutes and that included a run to Canadian tire to get a longer extension. Just some notes:
- I didnt take any of the COP plugs off, just the whole thing.
- 113 in/lbs is way less than I realized. I used a torque wrench and one time I didnt know it had already clicked.
- You will need a 6" extension. I used a 6" and then a 4" on top of it a couple times to clear some of the hoses.
- On the drivers front, I took off that hose. On the drivers rear you have to disconnect the plug. All the other ones come out with no additional work.
- You will need a universal joint on the passenger side rear. I couldnt figure out another way to do it.
- The rest were super simple to do.
- I also suggest a better gapping tool. I already had one of the disc gapping tools but realized for the first time on these plugs how crappy they are. On normal plugs you spin it until it stops, on this one you have to be so careful that I was nervous a couple times.
This is how mine were. 2013MY, not sure of the build date, starting drivers side front, then passenger side front, ending at passenger side rear:
-32
-34
-34
-36
-38
-38
Gapped them all down to about 30. Maybe placebo but the 2 or 3 minutes I took it for a spin it did feel better. Fuel use went WAY up, but that was also because it was fun to punch it. Hahah

Also replaced mine with the SP534's on saturday. 2011 ecoboost has 83,000 miles. The plugs that came out were all about .035, and the new ones were at .025. Interestingly, the box says the gap is NOT adjustable. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere else in this thread, although i may have overlooked it. So, following the manufacturers instructions, i did not adjust them. There is no difference i can tell on how the truck runs.

I have also replaced mine with 534's. Box says they are not adjustable and stealership said the same. After the change my idle can seem slightly rough at times but it runs great everywhere else. Did not notice a difference in fuel economy yet. Last weekend I towed a 27' TT with a 800lb atv in the box.

For the guys with the tough idle, did you disconnect the battery and let the truck "relearn" things? Might be worth a try.

Yes it will self adjust. Just takes longer because the ECU wont make drastic base map changes without long term data points. Not sure on the total time though. I usually have to wait 1,000km or so before I feel that the truck has really settled in.

Just ordered my Motocraft SP534's from O'Reilly's for $24.90. I thought that was pretty cheap! That's with shipping and tax too.
I just rolled over 40k miles on my stock everything engine. I'll report back on my plugs when I get them out.
I'll gap the plugs at .030 and torque them down to 13lbs. Probably use an in/lbs wrench though.
Good info here.
