Default Dealer says i need a new motor

2012 F150 3.5 L Ecoboost
XLT Supercrew Cab
All Stock except for Goodyear Duratrack tires in factory size.
158,xxx Miles

Coming home friday night the truck started making a knocking noise.
Sounded like lifter knock from older vehicles. Pulled over, checked vitals.
Oil and cooland looked good. All guages were reading fine. Trans temp was 194-197. Weve been in the mid 90's here the last couple of days.

First thing saturday i limped it over to the dealer. Just a couple miles down the road.

They tore into it yesterday and called me last night. says the motor is shot. i went in and got the list of codes it has blown. Their quite is $13,200 out the door.

p0016 Crankshaft Camshaft Position Bank 1 Sensor A
p0017 Crankshaft Camshaft Position Bank 1 Sensor B
p0019 Crankshaft Camshaft Position Bank 2 Sensor B
p0131 Oxygen 02 Sensor Low Voltage Bank 1
p0299 Turbo Charger Underboost
p0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
p0316 Missfire detected on Startup
p0365 Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Bank 1
p0369 Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent Bank 1
p0390 Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Bank 2
p0394 Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent Bank 2
p054a Cold Start B Camshaft Position Timing over-advance bank 1

The dealer says it because i didnt change my oil enough. I let the meter run down to 20% ish and would change it at the dealer where i bought it.

Any thoughts?

How would an internal engine issue cause that many codes? Sounds more like computer gremlins to me. 20% should be plenty acceptable for oil change intervals. Unless the dealer is doing something shady changing oil? idk.

You have an oil level meter? How did it get so low? If the dealer changed the oil they have a record of it. Were you hoping for warranty work?

The oil meter doesn't sense the level of oil. It is a determination of oil life.

Pretty sure he's talking about the maintenance minder that tracks driving styles, heat, rpm's, miles, etc and calculates oil life. Changing at 20% is pretty common across all makes of vehicles.

Its out of warrenty, im probably SOL there. This is my third f150, the other two made it to 300k miles. I had expected the same from this one.

I just expected more from this truck. I dont feel i should have to drop 8-13k halfway through the trucks expected lifespan. I understand suspension, steering and brakes. those are items that wear. Motor not so much with normal maintenance.

I got the good news in Canada in a GMC Jimmy. Heard noises, stopped in a small town, waited for two days for them to fiddle with parts. Next day I didn't make it 100 miles when the knocking started. Towed it to a dealer who pronounced the engine DOA.

In Canada you can't rent a Uhaul and two a vehicle either, all 4 wheels have to be off the ground so it went on a transport. I put a used engine in it for about $3,000.

How many miles before oil changes? 20% doesn't tell us much. What type of oil?

Hi rcordes,
Sadly, you and I are members of the club NOBODY wants to belong to...blown Eco engines. Here's what I recommend you do:
1. Gather all Service Records (oil changes) you have on that truck.
2. Contact Ford Customer Service:
(800) 392-3673 Monday-Friday->8:00AM-8:00PM EST, Saturday & Sunday->Closed
3. Let them know that you would like to open a claim, and tell them your story.

If you truck is completely Stock, as mine was, and you have all of your service records and they all fall within Ford's oil change interval recommendations, you should have a reasonably strong case to have Ford cover some, if not all of the replacement. (Unlikely to get them to cover all).

In my case, mine threw a rod at 68K, within the 100K powertrain, but outside the time by 6 months. My dealer quoted me $12K for a new long block 3.5 eco replacement.
About a week or so later, I got a call from the Dealer Service Dept that Ford agreed to cover part of the replacement, and I ended up still being on the hook for just over $5K. They gave me a loaner '17 SCREW to drive while in the shop - which hooked me on the 10speed, and larger cab.

Now I have a brand new engine, unlimited miles, 3 yr warranty, but decided I'd trade and get into a gen2 and buy an ESP (8yr 100k). Dealer gave me a pretty good deal that I feel good about.

In fact, I'm picking up my custom ordered '18 Lariat this afternoon!

I hope the best for ya. I know it sucks...I'm just a bit disappointed that it happened, and I felt there was nothing I had done wrong.

Good luck bud!
Over.

If you changed it like you said, that's just more dealership hogwash.

If the engine is truly shot, I expect to see visible physical damage to parts (bent valves, scored bearings, holed pistons, etc), and I'd want to see the damage with my own eyes. Ideally, I'd want to see it in the shop. After the hogwash about the oil, at the very least I'd be going by President Reagan's adage "trust, but verify."
