Custom tune from "SoCal Tuning" review

Hey all, you may have seen my "MPT VS Unleashed" thread and now I have moved on to SoCal Tuning. Not because Torrie's (Unleashed) tunes arent awesome or his customer service is lacking (quite opposite), but because I wanted someone local to tune for my methanol injection.

What I found was much more than only a methanol tune, I now run my SoCal tune(s) every day (non-Methanol and then will load methanol for race-mode :D) - the tunes he creates are flat out amazing.

When I called Shawn at SoCal tuning, I was interested in a dyno tune in person because I had been tired of the back-and-forth of email tuning. Even though he is local and could have charged me 3X more for the dyno tune, he recommended saving my money and going with the email tuning. He was absolutely possitive he would nail my tunes in only a few revisions and his confidence was reassuring.

Customer Service:

Shawn is a great dude. He prefers speaking over the phone (thank god) and even called ME after I had took the tunes for a spin to see how I liked them and if I had any feedback or revisions. He truely cares about how you like his product and puts tons of emphasis on SAFE TUNING. However, if you want to go all-out, he will warn you along the way but will deliver what you want.

The Tune:

This tune is hands down the fastest tune I have. I dare to say that his tune could be the fastest tune you could buy for the Eco. I have not tried Livernoise - from what I have heard, it is close to Unleashed. SoCal hands down without a question is MUCH faster. I felt like we tuned my truck together, going in steps:

1) Engine: Started out with a mild tune and ramped up to the aggressive version (fastest tune I have by far - I have MPT and Unleashed also).
2) Transmission: First, the shift points and then the shift firmness.
3) Other: I wanted to turn of Toque Madulation and Shawn gladly did so for me but made sure to recommend that I not run toque modulation off as a daily driver. Just to be safe rather than sorry.
4) DONE!

Shawn's customer service is great, he cares about what you want and your satisfaction, and puts out the best tunes I have ever tried with no wierd errors along the way like I have experienced with other custom tunes.

He is on the more expensive side but you get what you pay for. If you are a perfectionist like me, I highly doubt tunes get any better than this. He has not put a lot of emphasis on bursting into the Ecoboost market eventhough he has done quite a bit of eco tuning - I think that it is time for that to change :). I Highly recommend you buy from him.

If you have been following my "MPT VS Unleashed" thread, you'll know that I dont steer forum members in the wrong direction! I would never create a post without warrant.

Now, with that said... I believe in numbers over opinons.

I am going to try to get 0-60 time, 1/4 mile time, and a dyno reading in the near future! 0-60 and 1/4 will be via my SCT Livewire because the nearest track is an hour away  but I have heard it is quite accurate (My speedo has been adjusted to be spot-on and it measures vehicle speed versus tire revolutions for distance - how could it not be?).

Stay tuned! (no pun intended - HAH)

Numbers don't lie. If it feels faster it doesn't really mean it is. I'm not brand loyal at all. I go with the best and it seems like tunes keep getting better and better. Run it down the track and break 100 trap speed and everyone will believe it really is a faster tune.

Is this the place in anaheim cause I did a search about it cause I was interested in this as I live very close to this place but all I could find was very negative reports about him they were all mustang forums but still.

Nah, he is in Santa Clara, CA. Kinda ironic because the name is Socal but this is Norcal lol.

And I agree with you about the numbers. However, it isnt a "close call," the thing RIPS. It is very noticeably faster. Like, taking your stock truck and putting a tune in it for the first time kind of a difference - no mistaking.

Joewee3.5 05-06-2013 02:53 PM

If that's the case then that would be like trapping 93 stock and 99 with a tune then adding this tune to trap 105. If that's the case then I'd buy one tomorrow. Post results when you have them.

Will do!

I mean, I didnt really mean literally... that would mean that if a tune is +60hp then this tune would be +120hp lol.

Every truck is different and I have 34" LT tires, 20" rims, 4x4, SCREW, pretty much the heaviest F150 out there. So, instead of comparing to a set speed, I think it is more acurate to measure the difference on the same truck when switching tunes

EDIT:
I think it is the same guy - I believe he has a shop in Ontario as well. This is surprising, what were the other reviews saying?

My experience has been nothing but pleasant. Great customer service, cool guy, great tune. I have monitored the data via Livelink and everything looks good (AFR, KR, Misfire, etc.). Nothing throwing a big red flag at all.

I'm going to need you to stop finding faster tunes...just saying. My wallet is going to go dry. The more tuners the better for us that's for sure.
