You spent $3,500 to replace turbos? That's unfortunately on you then and the dealership that ripped you off. Brand new turbos are $1000 for the pair and you can have the labor done at any decent repair shop done for 600-800 bucks at MAX. The labor is not that hard to do with a lift and proper tools (again, decent repair shop). Where they came up with $3,500 is lunacy.

this was quoted from a ford dealership, don't they have to stay within range of suggested from ford if they're a dealership? anyway, my extended warranty took care of it. done with ford though

I have a 2013 F150 ecoboost with a turbo underboost code. Local Ford shop thinks its turbos. Any idea if its turbos or is there a different "common" problem related to this code? This truck only has 67 thousand miles on it.

They don’t have to stay within any range that I know of. They do lower the price in some instances if you are paying out of pocket but have an “inflated” cost when billing Ford. So your extended warranty covered it? That’s why you bought it right? So it cost you $100 or so? Sounds like you had a good experience. Good luck if you decide to go back to Chevy. They have zero issues of course.

Just a quick update. I got my new twin turbos put in and drove it about 2 weeks, then back in again for timing chain replacement AGAIN> I then was told that the whole engine needs replacement. I haven't seen my truck for the better part of this summer. Good thing? I haven't put any miles on my truck all summer. This piece of garbage is going to be traded in for a Chevy.

That's good, because Chevies never have any issues.

Seriously though, I'd probably look for another make/model of truck as well; but I wouldn't 'just go to Chevy.' They're no more or less reliable than Ford.

🤣🤣🤣. Funny ... I’ve replaced two on my ecoboost. And now a third one is leaking oil. So will be doing a 3rd one soon.

these engines are absolute garbage I’m sorry to say. My ecoboost crapped out the main crank bearings here 2 months ago. The reason ? Ford tech told me these engines can’t handle pulling much. They create to much heat and take out the crank bearings. Ford should not be advertising the tow capacities they do for these trucks. Turbos ... I’m on my 3 rd now. Trucks got 187,000 km. So 3 turbos , on its second engine , all kinds of emission issues 🤦🏼‍♂️ Sure wish they didn’t build crap these days.

Sounds like you have other issues. The maintenance isnt up to snuff or the dealer is missing something that is causing the failures. I pull with mine, in the rockies, at altitude, and with a 91 octane aftermarket tune that makes a lot more power than stock, and my turbos felt new when I had them off to put CRP manifolds in. 80,000 miles.

I have to agree with Mike regarding these engines.....my 2013 truck stayed in the shop from about 25k miles to 77k miles due to various engine and transmission lead frame issues. during that time I hardly ever drove the truck without a check engine light on. eventually I got Ford to fix the engine issues and the truck has been great since (although I periodically smell oil). I have 92k on it now so (knock on wood) so far so good. Now if I can get Ford to reimburse me for the lead frame replacement that they now extended warranty on I will be happy - but only if I get my $900 back for the replacement.

getting back to Mike's sentiments - this engine should have never been released in 2011 as there are obvious engineering issues with it that have been well document (here on this site as well as in their TSBs). Ford has tried to fix the issues with subsequent updates, but the same issues occur over and over in the new engines as well. I think Ford has the right idea in developing the 7.3 pushrod motor for the HD's....they need to develop a smaller version for the F150s.....my $.02
