Computer update a success!
 

Ok. I've had my Ecoboost for about 6 months and needless to say I have been unimpressed with the gas mileage, but attributed that to my wheels and tires and leveling kit. Well the straw that broke the camels back was that I was averaging 14mpg in town. I called ford, who told me to go to my local dealer and see if there was a computer update...which there was. Prior to the update I was averaging about 17.8 on the highway at 65...now, in the 15mile drive back home on the interstate and some in some not on the interstate, I averaged 20.2!!! Still below the projected gas mileage, but with the Toyos and the leveling kit, I'd say thats damn good! Now time for a CAI.

Do you know the release date of the update they did? I have a 12 that I get 15.5MPG on the interstate @ 65mph and close to 15 in the city. It was built Dec 21st.

I bought mine in August, time to go to the dealer! I can get 17 at 65. But I rarely keep my foot out of it.

Unfortunately I dont know the date...all I know is that my trip back home to illinois just got cheaper!

Ford released TSB 12-2-10.

I've been having a problem with my hand cals. being way off my computer cals. with the mpg. The computer says I'm getting around 3 mpg less than what I get by hand cals. My actual speed is also 2 mph less than what my speedo says...we're u having any problems with this? I really want to fix my truck of this. Plan on calling the dealer tomorrow.

12-2-10 3.5L GTDI CALIBRATION UPDATE - VARIOUS ISSUES - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 2/7/2012

ISSUE:
Some 2011-2012 F150 vehicles built on or before 2/7/2012 and equipped with a 3.5L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with various diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and driveability concerns.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

The calibration update contains improvement actions and enhancements to address the following conditions:

Intermittent engine surge during moderate to light loads at cruise.
Enhancements to misfire monitor detection.
Powertrain control module (PCM) DTC P0430 and/or P0096.
NOTE: INSURE ALL HARD FAULT POWERTRAIN DTCS ARE ADDRESSED PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE CALIBRATION UPDATE.



If the vehicle exhibits DTC P0430 replace the left bank catalytic converter. Refer to WSM section 309-00. Proceed to Step 2.
Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS release 77A.03A or higher. This new calibration is not included in the 2012.1A DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.
NOTE: PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

Googled the TSB. It is for diesel trucks. It is the same complaint we have with the 3.5L. It appears that a redesigned intercooler is in order. I wonder if we will see a similar program for our 3.5s? I had the exact problem with mine on a long drive in rain. Stepped on it and ... nothing. Did not throw CEL or code. Took foot out of the throttle drove about a 1/4 mile and put foot back in it and everything worked fine. I hope we get a fix soon.

Not to burst the bubble, but the TSB is for the 3.5L GTDI engine built on or before 2/7/12.

Ford does not list this TSB for any other vehicle.
