Hey Murdr, didn't you have a bad engine tick noise a few months ago? Did they ever diagnose that?

Here is a collection of "the noises" for you.

Does this happen each and every time you start it or only once in a while? First start up of the day? Thanks

Can we get some pics of the piston? I'd like to see if there was impact damage. If there are no impressions on the piston face, then can we get a pic of the rod bearing?

Could there be piston to valve contact if the timing out because of the chain issues?

Broken piston is usually caused by detonation.. Possibly a hill pull with a hot motor. Thing with these motors is they run 87 octane and listen and adjust timing so there is always on the edge possibilities. A piston hitting a valve is a very bad thing and usually the motor is immediately done. Many times the piston damage happens and we do not notice it until the next start up cold. Think back to the first time you noticed the noise and then the drive before it. Also the Radio may have cancelled out the noise when it occurred during the damage if you have the radio set that way. Detonation doesn't always create the knock/knock deep sound. Timing goes all over the place if you watch the graph.

Of course it may just be a malf piston or a different supplier of the set due to production needs.
A bent rod gets them every time but usually there are added noises so I doubt the rod has bent significantly to damage the piston itself but hydro lock is a potential Glog from the CAC posibility.
Think back, did it stumble and then have the noise the following cold start up. The stumble and associated pull over with flashing Cel hasn't happened to me; YET. But I run a Can on the fresh air side to remove the Gluk before it gets to the CAC.
The watery looking concoction are the unburnable nasty's from the most recent 270 mile run at expressway speeds in the rain mostly with low 50's F. It would have been introduced to the turbo and CAC if not for its removal ! Granted it is a build up over possibly 270 miles of rain soaked 70% of the time but still if it can change from vapor in the can it can also do it in the CAC and collect there. What is in the glass are from vapors coming from the engine crankcase during boost. Those couple ounces of watery combustion condensates could have been lying in the bottom of my CAC with out the trap.
