Cord, I think I would try to negotiate a deal with them. Let them attend to the cam phaser, but offer to buy a new chain if they install it while it is opened up. Seems like a fair compromise and could save either/both of you money in the long run.

Ford is dropping the 3.7 out of the f150 and replacing with a gas 3.5. Don't know if the non-turbo version will be DI or not. It might be because the 3.7's are not DI and turbo, see below article. The 5.0 isn't either of course.

Came across this article today and thought it was interesting given the subject at hand
^ That article and video seems to explain what is contributing to these issues?

Looks like the GDI and especially the GTDI engines timing chains are getting robbed of the proper oiling due to the high operating pressures at low torque. Like someone else said, on the EB torture test they ran the engine harder and at higher rpms rather than just everyday start and go driving which might explain it actually holding up better, getting better lubrication consistently on the test?

I agree, I would have asked to replace chain while it was apart if you paid for the part. It wouldn't have been any extra labor, the chain had to come off to replace the phasers. I would have had them do the tensioner and guides also, it would have been worth the little bit extra money to put new parts while it was open.

I thought about doing that, but then I would have never known if it was the cam phaser or the timing chain.

That chain should not look like that. I have never seen a chain with that kind of slack that is "normal"

Guess this dealer will learn the hard way...

Just went to pick the truck up. The good news is that the rattle at start up is gone. The bad news is that it set an error code. P0010; Intake Camshaft Position Actuator. That's the part they replaced. This is a different code than what I saw when I brought the truck in. That code was P0016 or a mismatch between the crank sensor and the cam position sensor.

Sounds like maybe they forgot to plug in the cam phaser solenoid.

That's what he checked when I watching. He then ran diagnostics and said there was a signal but that it wasn't within range. At that point he said he was going to have to hit the service manuals so I went back to work. I'm thinking this is a new issue from the installation and not a preexisting issue. Strangely the diagnostics also showed low engine vacuum which would explain why there is no power brake boost. He felt the hard pedal too. Goes in for one problem and comes out with two new ones...
