Timing chain should have 0 slack. The tensioner should take up the slack, it is spring loaded and oil pressure actuated. The ratcheting teeth keep it extended as it takes up the slack as the chain wears.

I agree, it screams wrong to me too, however I'm just the owner. I have to let them try the cam phasers first. Even in the video I was questioning the slack to the service manager. The other owner that I've been PM'ing said that Ford replaced the cam phasers first on his truck and then replaced the timing chain when the problem didn't go away.

They told me the same exact thing about my mazdaspeed3, they said it was the cam phaser, they when it made the noise at startup again the next week I was out of warranty and I had to fix it myself. I'm getting deja vu... So if the chain does indeed need to be changed, is Ford going to charge you for labor again? Did you happen to see how many teeth were showing on the main tensioner?

Ironically, that's exactly what happened with the guy I have been PM'ing. I'll have to work on Ford if it has to come apart again. I've said "Timing Chain" enough times that people have heard me.

The main tensioner is a plastic slipper so you can't count teeth. The toothed pulley in the video is a idler pulley.

This thread is very interesting to say the least, being a tech at a Chevy dealer for the past 25+ yrs we have never really had timing chain problems until the 3.6 motors were introduced across multiple GM car lines. Stretched chains, phasers and lots of TSB's and part updates. I realize its somewhat apples and oranges with the eboboost and the GM 3.6 but the principals are the same. In the last 8 months or so we have been reflashing the pcm's to modify the oil life monitors, people were going 10-12K miles on their oil. Now you would think anyone with common sense wouldn't do that but most customers really don't care and will go as long as they possibly can. GM has also changed over to the new Dexos synthetic blend oil in 2011 and now uses 5-30,5-20 and in 2014 a 0-20 in trucks. Now their are multiple bulletins/info on the importance of using GM oil filters and how dangerous some of the inferior aftermarket ones can be. So with all that being said, fast forward to last Thurs when I was picking up my new FX4 F-150, They gave me a coupon for a free 1st oil change and told me(because they know I'm a mechanic) that if I change my own oil to be sure to use a genuine Ford filter because Ford has started denying warranty mechanical engine failures including timing chains if a aftermarket oil filter was used... Just wanted to pass all this along guys..

I would have gone out to the nearest Autozone to get all the stuff to change my oil WITHOUT a motorcraft filter, changed the oil & filter, and then come back to them and say "Go ahead and deny my warranty, I dare you".

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the warranty cannot be conditioned to a specific brand of parts, services or vehicle modifications unless those parts or services are provided free of charge. Essentially what they told you is illegal, and they cannot say that you must only use Motorcraft filters unless they provide those filters for free. They can tell you to use a certain grade or quality of filter though. If you are in Canada then that might be a different story.

I will say that one of the first things the dealer asked me was what grade oil and who's filter I had been using. If I hadn't said that it was a Ford filter on the truck, I'm sure it would have been changed.

Not sure how the EB oil monitoring program differs but I know when I get mine changed at 5k, it is usually reading around 50-55%. I just cannot bring myself to go 10k between changes.
