Anyone have problems yet with 5.0 or Ecoboost
#22
My roommate is a tech at Ford and he warned me a couple of ecoboost have come in with an evap fault that they have not been able to figure out or fix. I haven't had this problem with my truck with 4980 miles.

I have the 5.0 and it has a high pitched acceleration squeal. Sounds like air sucking through a seal or a vacuum leak. Two dealerships in central Indiana have kept the truck for days at time. A few other brand new trucks on the lot did it louder then mine. It is a very annoying noise between 1500 and 2200 RPM. They submitted to the engineers at the engine plant. They said not to take action at this time, and it was normal to have some intake noise. The dealers have all agreed with me on how it will drive you crazy listening to the hiss/squeal of that engine. However, until Ford decides to troubleshoot and find the problem, nothing will be done. Its crap I think, but hopefully more people will complain if they have this problem.

I have had my ecoboost for about two months and the lcd display screen in the instrument cluster has stopped working the only thing that comes up is default Ford oval. It has been to the dealer and they tell me that it is a programming/quailty control issue and it could be months to get a new one Ford has to figure out whats wrong with it. I posted somthing about this about three weeks ago. I will be contacting the district representative on friday.

EcoBoost engine block finish is rough/flaky
Does anyone else with an EcoBoost have a rough/flaking engine block coating? I noticed it looking right over the radiator below the valve cover. It has the look of cheaply galvanized metal. It's very rough to the touch, not all like like this marketing pic:

I recently had my trailer in for service and thought it would be a good time to bring it in the the Ford dealer - where they can test drive it and duplicate the issue. I had the tranny guy at the dealer come for a ride and he immediately noticed it.
Made an appointment and brought it in yesterday. After waiting all day, they "could not duplicate the issue". MAN THAT PISSED ME OFF!!! The "standard" response! I told them several times that it was bad when towing and was very subtle when not. I told them to talk to the tranny guy, that he agreed that is was a problem.
After a few back and forth calls, they told me that they would be changing the transmission valve body.
Now, I know nothing about transmissions and hope that that will fix it... I'll have to wait and see. I hope to get it done next week - just in time for the following weekend of towing my toy hauler. Good test to see if it worked.

I'm just shy of 1K on my EB. The block on my engine looks "rough" too, but I know that's just the block coating.
Mine developed a Stutter and ticking at idle, within a week of bringing it home. I've had it in to be checked and was told, "We can find nothing wrong".
While driving around town, I've noticed that the truck is constantly shifting...sometimes very roughly, other times smoothly. Not sure about that one, but being able to notice the differences in HOW it shifts makes me wonder.
Although I never thought I would care for it, I like the sync feature. The problem there is that it will randomly drop my cell phone, and when that happens I have to stop (sync will not pair if the truck is going more than 5mph), delete sync from my phone, cycle the phone off/on, and then go through the whole pairing process again. That's just annoying.
The biggest concern for me is the MPG. Best I can do is about 13.4 mpg...and that was on a 200 mile round trip on the interstate. Didn't matter where the cruise was set from 65-75.....still 13.4mpg.
I've mentioned that to he dealership several times, and keep being told "Once it reaches 5k, you SHOULD see a major increase in MPGs"....guess we'll see on that one. If the MPGs don't improve, that could be a deal breaker for me. It will either mean trading it in on something with better fuel mileage, or seeing if somebody comes up with an "economy" tune for this engine.
The surprising thing about the "tune" is that I spoke with the Service Manager at the dealership about tuners (while we were talking about the MPGs).....he told me that as long as a tuner was used "sensibly" he would not void a warranty.
