You were comparing numbers for 2wd without max tow and 4 wd with max tow). Easy mistake, but rule of thumb is 2wd will always tow more than 4wd with the same set up.
The following chart is a really good reference for the towing capabilities.

Thanks for the info, I had gotten my numbers from the ford "build site", but was always confused by this! The build site is somewhat unclear, as it didn't take in to account the Max Trailer tow package, I think...

Glad I could help.

I have tried getting a clear answer for years as to why 4wd had lower capacity and been told alot of assumptions but noone has said they know for sure. Logically you would think it would increase capacity but then you shouldn't be in 4wd on hard surfaces anyway which is where you would most likely be when towing so both trucks are being 2wd and should be the same. But alas it isn't.

It has been that way as long as I have been towing.

IF anyone really KNOWS the reason I would love to hear it, it's just something I have had to accept as fact without ever knowing the truth behind it.

4wd adds weight to the vehicle. That added weight has to be subtracted from the towing capacity. That is why a 2wd will allways tow more. Its usually only a couple hundred pounds.

GCWR(gross combined weight rating) is another way to figure out exactly what you can tow. It includes the weight of the truck plus any payload, plus trailer weight and you can not exceed the GCWR.

Getting about 13mpg. Don't have 1000 miles on it yet so hopefully it gets better when it is broken in.

Thank you that makes sense.

as mentioned above...weight is the factor. The 4x4 weight adds a couple hundred pounds more which gets deducted off that total.

hey Mike60110,

With that 12.0 mpg, do you think that you have a heavy foot? I am seeing 13-14 mpg elsewhere and was just wondering if you are punching it a lot or if you are doing a lot of city driving??? thanks! I really want to go with the 6.2....but hoping I can avg around 14 or so. It isnt a deal breaker, but I know that some of you with this new 6.2 may be jumping on it a lot and that can bring down the mpg's.
