5.0 rebuild options?
Has anyone on here rebuilt their 5.0 yet? Or their trans? I ask because I'm currently at 285,600 miles on my 2011 and it's still running strong buy when the day comes I will rebuild the drivetrain. I won't be doing a performance build by any means so I will just need the basic high quality components. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

My honest take is that few or no aftermarket shops and manufacturers can match the tolerances and material quality of the oem. I would lean heavily toward a crate motor from ford. If that's too expensive, you can get a low-ish mileage used one for $2-3k to swap in. I used to have a very different opinion until I started measuring freshly bored blocks from machine shops.

That was kind of my thought as it comes with a warranty. The ballpark price I got last time was $7500 for a crate engine but I know I can get it cheaper as we as a company do a ton of work through the local dealership, the last 6.7 we had done was only $6k out the door for a long block.. damn glow plugs....
The truck runs great now but even though I'm keeping up with the maintenance there will be a point it gives up the ghost.
But at this point I only have $2k into the truck, that's buying it, fixing it, and registration, so it definitely warrants fixing at almost any cost.
Thanks.

Unfortunately that's the conclusion. The best option seems to be buy a second generation 5.0 crate motor. It's costly but unfortunately you would spend more trying to rebuild yours. The one exception seems to be if it has very minimal cylinder wear and can get away with a 0.005 piston. Some will say 0.01 is acceptable but I don't know if I would risk it. That's also a lot of time and money to risk a possible failure.
I am with you I miss the days where you could do a good rebuild for $2000 but those days are long over unless your dealing with push rod motors.

Yea I'll have to look into the options at the dealership. There is virtually zero oil consumption, the oil has been changes every 5k miles since birth and every time it's been dead nuts on. When I recently had the front cover and TB off I wiped the inside of the intake manifold and there was a film but nothing crazy.
What did they change across the years where a 2015 won't fit?
Then my other concern is the trans and how long that will put up with towing and hauling, I make trips up north quite often towing a decent trailer or hauling stuff. Maybe I'll just have to use my new work truck when it comes in.
Speaking of that how long does it usually take for a truck to come in when ordered? My 17 f150 was ordered in November and they said it won't be in till end of February or early March, that seems a bit long.

I'd say you are on borrowed time on the tranny, from what I have seen on the company trucks we've had a couple go out between 250,000-300,000. Which is good in a construction company truck but parts wear out sooner or later. I really think anything over 250k is pretty good on major components...I'm at 171,000 and certainly hoping to take it close to 300k

One thing I know about is that 2015 added intake manifold runner control, which are actuated valves in the intake manifold. You may be able to put your 2011 intake on it and be ok, but there may be other differences.

And as for the trans I've done a fluid analysis and it came back good, as in no particles or foreign material so I'm comfortable for now haha. In our fleet we see many engines go out before transmissions, but we also do trans flushes every 75k miles.
I do think the death of this truck will be sitting in my driveway. As a company truck it got 50k miles a year, now it will be lucky to get 5k a year.
