5.0 oil consumption
#11
I don't know if this helps but I changed the oil for the first time at 2285 miles. Yesterday, I checked the oil at 3200 miles and it is exactly where it was when I changed it.
I would not be happy with using a quart every 1500 miles on a new engine. You might want to ask to contact the District Service Manager - there's an 800 number in your Owner's Manual.

Unfortunately Ford has always said that a quart every 1500 in normal, my parents had the same issue back in the 90's with a new Explorer. Ford refused to do anything about it, there was no help from the lemon law, etc. The dealer would actually over fill it to keep the low oil light from coming on between oil changes. The only thing that worked for them was a large number of lemon decals and vinyl lettering on the windows explaining the situation. A rather generous buy back offer came not long after that.

Yes, my wife and both called the "800" number. I'm waiting for another call back now. I like the lemon idea. I'm sure the tree huggers out there would love go hear of fords normal pollution standards. Yes I do have black residue in my tailpipes.

I change my oil every 5k miles - I'm coming up on 10k soon and checked my oil. Although clean the level is sitting on the bottom dot, not very promising. I have already advised my dealership to start the oil consumption test next time I come in for service.
Another poster made the argument above that if you are to go by the IOLM we would essentially be running these engines dry on oil at that interval. Ford can't argue with that.

This oil use is within acceptable limits for all brands. I'd say it's rare, but occasionally we hear of an engine that uses more oil like this. Still acceptable. Ford gives oil change intervals, but they don't say you won't add oil between these changes. They specifically say to check the oil and top off when needed.

It either has:
1. Bad piston rings
2. Bad gaskets
3. Bad crankshaft seal
4. Bad Camshaft seal
5. Bad valve stem seal
All of which are unacceptable on such a high tech engine IMO because I have had 2 5.4 one 2v and a 3v, a 4.6 3v, and a 4.2 and driven them all to 120k miles and beyond and not a single one of them ever used a drop of oil. This ain't a 2-stroke

Yeah it may be within "acceptable" limits to cover their own ***, but it's far from acceptable. If it is continuing to do this for any amount of time after the Ford "Break-In" period, I would be sending it for repair on their dime because it's a factory defect.
