5.0 launch?

Just wonderin, when u guys stall your truck to say 2000rpms then get off the brake and floor it. Does the truck just seem kinda weak for a second? Seems to take awhile to get to the power band. I had hopes my tune was goin to fix it, not so much. Called mike today and explained it. Just said it was to be expected with a 6000lb truck and a motor that makes peak torque over 4000rpms. Guess my complaint is ridiculous because i thought this truck was really quick when i got it. Now its got mods and it aint enuf! I will admit im guilty of this.

Hard to say without using my "butt dyno" lol. Fast is a relative thing...I own a crotch rocket...everything Ford makes is slow to me...that said, my EB is easily the fastest truck I've ever owned and the 5.0 is no slouch. I don't know your level of experience...so don't take this as an insult, but could this be a traction control thing? I know that my FX4 feels like a turd when I turn hard onto a gravel road and "get it" as compared to my old '05 4.6l...but clearly that is a function of traction control and not the engine. The traction control can really be a Nazi when it comes to the fun factor, lol.

If you are familiar with the traction control "personality" (hitting the button only kind of turns it off, you have to hold it down a few seconds to completely kill it) then maybe you are just experiencing the natural law of physics that effect a 5000lb vehicle at launch, lol. :)

Don't build it up and it will be faster.it's pulling timing.

I do turn the traction control off, but i simply press the button and my lcd screen says , traction control off. Are u saying that by holding it down it turns off more. I assumed off was off up to the speed it reengages. I even told mike that my truck will barely chirp the tire with the 93perf tune installed. I had myself convinced this dead spot was a product of torque management and not actual lack of power, but mike said he removes tm up to a safe level and it seems no better. It seems to bog before taking off like crazy.

Don't load-up the transmission (and driveline).
  • left foot on brake.
  • right foot hoovering over gas pedal.
  • simultaneously lift left foot and mash right foot.

    Works for me.
Remember there will be/is a slight delay due to the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control ... a.k.a. drive-by-wire), though I've found that in my 2011 5.0L this is much more betterer (meaning - less of an issue) than in my previous 2009 4.6 3V.

Yes. RSC (Roll Stability Control) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) (in addtion to TSC) are disabled. *.Owner's manual page # 290.

Thanks guys for the tips, i will try them tmrw. Goin to a local short track tmrw. Really only interested in working on 60ft times now. I have no doubt its doin the dang thing from 3500 up. Never considered it was pulling timing becase of the stalling up. I will also try holding down the trac control button.

I never thought about the timing thing...but that does make sense. I would ask you to try the traction control thing too. Only reason I realized this was because I thought the same thing about it being off. If you have access to gravel roads you can test it...turn off the TC by hitting the button and it will tell you it is off, but give it hell on a gravel road from a stop and you will quickly realize it is certainly not all the way off, thus the holding down of the button for a few seconds to completely turn it off.

That all said, the timing thing might be your bigger issue. As much as I hate it at times, traction control is normally helpful when it comes to racing. Even though burning out is fun, and "feels" fast...it is by it's nature power wasted that is not helping you go forward. (Still fun though.) :whistling2:

I load of the trasmission and it takes off like a rocket. I do not hold it for long though, just enough to bring the rpms up then let go of the brake.

I haven't tried the mashing the throttle method in this truck really because in my past vehicles it slowed me down. I had to find the sweet spot that was usually around 1/2 throttle to launch then go full throttle after 15mph or so. I will give it a try sometime. I do know that if I do not hold the brake hard enough in 2wd while loading the trans up I will do an insane burnout!

Race Weight 5,390 4x4 w/ 3.73's. I heat the tires for abour 1-2 seconds ... works for me then stall it to 1200-1500 (not much over idle) in 2-Hi and it rips off the tree like an angry ape. Other than 5-Star tune and CAI, it's otherwise 100% stock on street tires on my sig time below.

Im goin to give these tips a try tonite and see what kind of 60ft times i get. The track isnt quite an 1/8 so those times wont be relevant. I had been tryin to launch in 4hi and 2wd with as many rpms as it would build, but it would fall on its face for a second before taking off. That makes me beleive the computer was getting involved some how, and pulling time makes sense.
