Proof that any thread can turn into a 5.0 vs. Eco pissing match.

That extra torque will help alot with holding sixth gear on hills.

You likely will get a little better mileage using regular, but it's with the extra cost for the grunt ethanol gives you.

Be sure ti put your truck in tow haul mode too.
Well I'm not sure who's Ecoboost you are referring too?? I average 10.6mpg towing a 33' 7500lb trailer. That's filling up with 93 octane that boosts my HP up to 385 and torque up to 430lb/ft which allows me to cruise up any hill never seeing more than 2500 rpm's maintaining 65mph...Now that's what i call GRUNT

Sully had a childish melt down today. Don't think we need to worry about his false posts anymore

Speed is definitely a factor. I have pulled my 33.5 foot Bullet Premier to Florida and back to Michigan two years in a row and averaged 9 mpg over the two trips. BUT I was driving 70 to 75 mph for the whole trip. 5.0 Screw 4x4 6.5 bed HD 3:73.

Took my Pontoon up the cabin which is around a 100miles round trip, first time since I got truck and I'm VERY happy with the results. Roughly 3000# and pushes a lot of air. 11.9mpg @ 65mph and my previous 4.6l 2v mountaineer would get 9.5-10.5mpg on the same run! There is a 1 mile long grade along the way where my Mountaineer would be to the floor and it would usually loose a few MPH climbing so just for fun I booted the 5.0l down as the start of the grade and crossed the top @ 75mph, a gain of 10mph instead of a loss of 2-3! Only thing is I felt the truck could have dropped another gear and climbed faster but it didn't want to drop from 4th to 3rd with my foot planted. I had 6th locked out the whole trip as small inclines would drop me to 5th anyhow and I was very suprised that it held 5th on every hill I came across except for the grade where I booted it down.

That's really good. I have a similar designed trailer (RVision Onyx) 25' and I get between 10.5 and 11.5. Anyone pulling a similar sized and shape trailer with a 5.0 will get similar results.

There is soooooo much more than engine to consider when towing. Hills, grades, head wind, tail wind, cross wind, traffic conditions, and most of all speed, that to generalize is difficult. So far I am lucky to not have had to tow into strong head winds. I keep my speed about 62 mph on the interstate.

I love the EB for it's effortless torque in the towing range. But I can see why 5.0 guys love their engine for the mid range to top end performance. The 5.0 coupled with 3.73 is a powerful tow vehicle in its own right. But when pulling a load so much energy is necessary to move so much weight and surface area. That's just the physics of it.

I have pulled my Bullet TT for two months with a weight of 5500 lbs loaded with my 5.0 liter and get between 10 and 11 mpg at about 60 to 65. I find a get better fuel economy in tow haul mode with the cruise controller on. Let the computer do all the work. Love the Ford brake controller. Works great.

In July I towed a Mustang from Waukesha, WI to Albany, OR and back. Yes 2200 miles one way. Went through Yellowstone Park on the way back. We took US 20 from Albany, OR to Yellowstone, then US 212, up to Billings, MT. Climbed of 11,000 feet leaving Yellowstone, then Interstate 94 home. Yes the 5.0 does seem to loose a bit of power at 11,000 feet, but it was not bad. Not a lot of hills until west of North Dakota. The 5.0 did awesome. It pulled the entire load (5325lbs) plus 400 lbs of extra parts & tools/tires with ease. Not sure why people say the 5.0 can't tow. 4533 miles, using 275 gallons of 87 octane, I averaged 16.4mpg. Tow/Haul mode, and the cruise set on 68mph. The only thing I ever noticed was my 5.0 did not like the 85 octane that you can find in the higher elevations. It pulled up most every grade in 5th gear. On a few of the 6% grades, it did use 4th. The trans temp ran in the hight 190's unless it was climbing a grade longer than a mile. Then a few times it got 210*. I never ran into any high winds or storms. Never had a tail wind either. I love the 5.0. It does everything I need and the sound is awesome. I have several people ask me how it was doing in the hills, and several said it sounded awesome when I passed them going up the hills.

So, that is my real world towing. Not just 100 miles, but 4500 miles. Flawless performance from my truck. 2011 super-cab 5.0L 4x4 3.55's, all stock!!
