5.0 L - Real World Fuel Economy

Just rolled 1 year of ownership on Feb 9th. Still loving this truck and impressed with the mileage. My daily commute is only 8 miles each way, so my truck is never warmed up. I haul my ATV, snowmobile, and lots of woods travelling for hunting/fishing. Grocery store and other amenities are only 3-4km from me, so I do alot of short running around.
I reset Trip B the day I drove it off the lot, and haven't reset it since. Truck pulls 20.5-21MPG going 65mph like clockwork, and I typically average 20mpg when I go on highway trips.

12 sc with 3.55. 1600 miles. Around town a slightly disapointing 14.5. But I am really impressed with hiway mileage. At 65 I have no problem with 21-22 if flat and not too much wind. I think 20 at 70-75. Stop and go is a killer no matter what. I use cc on the freeway. If I could keep it at 55 23-24 would be possible. I am surprised others are not seeing as good on the open road.

See? It works in monkeys!
2011 Supercab with 3.73's... Lifetime average is 15.9 l/100km (14.7 mpg) over 14,000km. Highway is better, closer to 11 l/100km (21 mpg) on Highway trips.
My Dodge 2500 pulls a constant 9.5 mpg and has for the past 175,000 km.
If I wanted fuel economy I would have kept my TDI Golf Wagon...

One thing I have found out with mine is that short trips kill my MPG. I just did a 140 mile trip through the hills if Missouri and even against a head wind I got 19.8. doing mostly 65. I was happy with that, it was a good head wind and was far from a flat drive. My average is around 16 only because of all the short trips. I only drive about 15 miles to work and it is all hills and even driving into town is all hills.

2013 Supercrew Fx4 with 5.5' box:
4500 miles since I bought it in early March, haven't reset it yet. Shows a solid 19.0 MPG with about a 75/25 mix of highway/city driving. We had snow and cold all through the beginning of May. Oil life still shows over 50% yet, and truck is not not broken in by my guess. I rarely tow or haul anything, and keep it close to 70 MPH or below on the rural interstates. I did use just under 1/2 quart of oil the first 3000 miles, that seems to have almost stopped now.
I think one of the biggest keys to getting good fuel mileage is learning not to take off like a jackrabbit from a dead stop every chance you get. Just because an engine has 360 HP doesn't mean you need to use every last one of them, though I admit it is music to my ears the few times I have.
Also, whether its a Prius or a long-nose Kenworth, any vehicle pushed over 70 MPH is going to drink fuel like a pig, that will not change. My 1998 GMC Vortec 350 4x4 would occasionally squeak out close to 17 MPG, I thought even that was pretty amazing for a used and abused pickup with gobs of miles.
Glad I went with the 5.0 instead of the Ecoboost, less parts to go wrong in the long run, just my preference. Seems like the 3.5 is prone to a few more headaches too, namely Charge Air Cooler which to the best of my knowledge Ford STILL has no official fix for.
The difference in up front costs vs long term fuel economy is pretty much a wash between the 5.0 and 3.5 the way I see it.

2013 XLT SCAB 3.31 w/17 wheels, approx 3000 miles on her right now. Took a 900 mile round trip all interstate and averaged 17.6 driving 80-90 mph with a strong headwind both ways. Remember the interstate here is 80 mph. It has a bed cover but I am going to a full synthetic and a cold air intake in the near future and hope to see a little improvement. Most of my in town driving is interstate as well and currently sitting at 17.7.
